The most versatile weight in the shop

Fingering weight yarn does more jobs than any other. It is fine enough for lace, tough enough for socks when nylon is added, smooth enough for stranded colourwork, and light enough that a whole shawl weighs less than a hundred grams. That range is why 4 ply occupies so much shelf space here, from budget cottons at pocket-money prices to hand-dyed merino and Shetland wool spun for Fair Isle. What they share is roughly comparable thickness — typically around 400 metres per 100g, though it varies — and a needle range around 2.25mm to 3.25mm.

Choosing by fibre

• Sock yarn with nylon: Regia, WYS Signature and Paintbox Socks. The nylon content is what stops heels wearing through.
• Pure wool: Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift and Cascade 220 Fingering, both grippy and perfect for colourwork that needs to stay put.
• Superwash merino: Cascade Heritage, Malabrigo Sock and similar — soft, saturated colour, best for shawls and next-to-skin garments.
• Cotton: Scheepjes Catona, DMC Natura and Paintbox Cotton 4 ply, favourites for amigurumi, granny squares and summer tops.
• Baby yarns: Sirdar Snuggly 4 Ply, James C. Brett Baby and Patons Fairytale Fab, soft and washable for shawls and matinee coats.
• Minis and small balls: 25g balls and mini skeins for colour-blocked projects and stripes without buying six full balls.

What to make with it

Socks are the obvious answer and the reason most knitters keep 4 ply in the stash, but the weight rewards ambition. A fingering-weight shawl blocks out enormous from a single skein. A 4 ply jumper takes roughly twice the stitches of the same garment in DK and gives you a garment you can wear indoors all year — a genuinely different thing from a chunky sweater. Colourwork mittens, hats and yoked cardigans belong here too, because the small stitches keep the pattern crisp and the double thickness of stranded fabric is warm without being bulky.

Tension, quantity and hand-dyes

At this gauge, small errors compound fast. Swatch over at least 15cm, wash it and let it dry before measuring; superwash merino in particular relaxes noticeably. Buy by metreage rather than ball count, because 4 ply is sold in 25g, 50g and 100g put-ups and comparing labels alone will mislead you. With hand-dyed yarns, differences between skeins of the same colourway are normal, so alternate two skeins every two rows across a large plain area — the change is invisible if you do and glaring if you do not.

Care and making socks last

Superwash and nylon-blend socks handle a cool machine wash in a bag; dry flat rather than tumbling. Non-superwash wool and Shetland want a cool hand wash, a squeeze, a towel roll and flat drying, and they bloom beautifully afterwards — Fair Isle in particular only looks right once it has been washed and blocked. Reinforce sock heels and toes with a strand of fine nylon thread as you knit, and darn small holes early. Store finished lace flat with tissue rather than folded on the same crease.
