Product Description
Inspired by a fun summer dress my girls loved to wear, and a yarn that was too irresistible to not buy. Starting out as a simple halter top tunic, with the added edge on the back making it a T-strap tunic. The length can be adjusted to make it tunic length or a dress length, or shorter if that is your preference. A play on my daughter’s name and the yarn that inspired this beautiful little tunic that any little girl would love.

Zooey's Summer Tunic by Knitting Munchkin
Project Overview
Zooey's Summer Tunic is a downloadable knitting pattern designed for young children in sizes 12 months through 6 years. This intermediate-level garment is inspired by a beloved summer dress and features a distinctive halter neckline with a T-strap back design. The tunic offers versatility in styling, as it can be worn standalone or layered over a shirt, and the length is easily customizable to create a shorter tunic, traditional tunic length, or full dress silhouette.
Construction Technique
This garment is constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked in-the-round to create seamless body pieces. The pattern begins with a halter-style neckline and progresses downward, incorporating strategic shaping through increases and decreases to achieve the fitted waist and relaxed tunic silhouette. The addition of a back T-strap provides structural support and visual interest to the design.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The primary stitch used throughout Zooey's Summer Tunic is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface ideal for summer wear. The pattern employs standard knitting abbreviations including:
- k – knit
- inc – increase(s); increasing
- dec(s) – decrease(s); decreasing
- CO – cast on
- BO – bind off
Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases positioned to create the tunic's fitted waist and flowing hem.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. This gauge is essential for achieving proper fit across the finished measurements. The tunic is available in four child sizes with the following finished measurements:
- 12 months: Collar 16", Front Chest 7", Chest (in-the-round) 18", Waist (in-the-round) 16"
- 2T: Collar 18", Front Chest 8", Chest (in-the-round) 21", Waist (in-the-round) 20"
- 4T: Collar 18", Front Chest 8", Chest (in-the-round) 23", Waist (in-the-round) 21½"
- 6T: Collar 19", Front Chest 9", Chest (in-the-round) 25", Waist (in-the-round) 22½"
Yarn and Materials
Zooey's Summer Tunic is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, which provides an ideal balance of drape and structure for a lightweight summer garment. The pattern requires standard knitting notions including stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, stitch holders for managing stitches during construction, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming if necessary.
Customization Options
One of the standout features of this pattern is its flexibility regarding length. Knitters can easily adjust the schematic length to create their preferred silhouette—whether a shorter tunic, standard tunic length as shown in the design, or extended dress length. This adaptability makes the pattern suitable for various preferences and seasonal transitions.
