Zelda Lace Neckwarmer Knitting Pattern by Brenda Lavell

Project Overview

The Zelda Lace Neckwarmer is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Brenda Lavell through Phydeaux Designs. This elegant neckwarmer is crafted as a one-size accessory that showcases the beauty of hand-dyed and hand-painted yarns through an intricate lace construction. The finished piece functions as both a versatile neckwarmer and decorative cuff, featuring a sophisticated heirloom-quality design suitable for those with intermediate knitting experience.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a fitted neckwarmer with refined finishing details. The accessory measures 14 inches in length when unstretched and stretches to accommodate 16-19 inches when worn, making it adaptable to various neck sizes. The neckwarmer features attached i-cord edges and borders that frame the lace pattern, along with a button placket and handsewn hem for a polished, finished appearance. The design is intended to be worn as a decorative neck accessory that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Techniques and Construction Methods

The Zelda Lace Neckwarmer employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its refined appearance. The pattern utilizes a unique lace stitch pattern that is specifically designed to showcase the visual qualities of hand-dyed and hand-painted yarns. The construction includes attached i-cord edges, which are decorative cord borders that are knitted directly onto the main piece for a seamless, professional finish. A buttonhole band is incorporated into the design, created using the knitter's method of choice, allowing for secure fastening. The piece is completed with a handsewn hem, which adds to the heirloom quality of the finished accessory.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern features a lace stitch construction that forms the primary design element. Lace stitches are created through yarn overs and decreases that form decorative holes and openwork patterns throughout the fabric. The buttonhole band incorporates yarn overs paired with two-together decreases (yo, p2tog) to create functional buttonholes within the band structure. These stitch combinations allow the hand-dyed yarn to display its color variations and painted details prominently while maintaining structural integrity.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Yarn Weight: Fingering weight yarn, requiring approximately 95 yards total
  • Yarn Fiber Content: 80% merino wool, 20% cashmere blend
  • Yarn Example: Pattern is shown worked in Hedgehog Fibres yarn in the Mermaid colorway
  • Needles: US size 3 knitting needles for main pattern work, with one size larger needles optional for binding off
  • Gauge: 24 stitches and 38 rows equals 4 inches in the lace pattern when blocked
  • Cast-On: 31 stitches using the method of choice

Yarn and Fiber Considerations

The fingering weight yarn specified for this pattern is a luxury blend combining merino wool and cashmere. This fiber composition provides softness, breathability, and gentle drape ideal for a neckwarmer worn close to the skin. The pattern is specifically designed to showcase hand-dyed and hand-painted yarns, making it an excellent choice for featuring artisanal or specialty yarns with unique color variations and visual interest. The relatively modest yardage requirement of 95 yards makes this an accessible project for using precious or expensive specialty yarns.

Pattern Difficulty and Skill Requirements

While listed as intermediate level, this pattern requires solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with lace knitting techniques. Knitters should be comfortable reading lace charts or written lace instructions, managing yarn overs and decreases, and maintaining consistent tension throughout the pattern. The attached i-cord edges and handsewn finishing details require additional skills beyond basic knitting. This pattern is well-suited for knitters who have completed several projects and are ready to explore decorative stitch patterns and refined finishing techniques.
