What is Being Made

This is a casual, seamless knit tee designed for beginners and intermediate knitters. The garment features a playful striped color-work design created by working with multiple mini skeins or leftover sock yarn. The finished measurements range from 33.75 inches (85.5 cm) to 50.5 inches (128.5 cm) in bust circumference, offering multiple sizing options for different body types.

Construction Technique

The You've Got a Friend in Me Tee is constructed using a top-down seamless knitting method, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a garment with minimal finishing work. The construction begins with the neckline shaping, which is initially worked flat to establish proper neckline proportions. Once the neckline shaping is complete, the raglan yoke is joined and transitioned to working in the round for the body of the garment. This hybrid approach combines the precision of flat knitting for the neckline with the efficiency of circular knitting for the body.

The striping pattern is created by working 4 rows or rounds in each color before switching to the next color. This consistent stripe repeat creates a balanced, visually appealing pattern. Knitters can customize their color order before beginning the project, making each tee unique based on personal preference and available yarn colors.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern featured in this design is K2-tbl, P2 Rib, which appears in both flat and circular variations:

  • K2-tbl, P2 Rib in the Round: Knit 2 through the back loop, purl 2, repeating this sequence around
  • K2-tbl, P2 Rib Flat: Row 1 (right side) begins with knit 2 through the back loop, purl 2. Row 2 (wrong side) is worked as knit 2, purl 2 through the back loop

The ribbed stitch pattern provides excellent stretch and recovery, making it ideal for necklines and cuffs. The twisted knit stitches (knit through the back loop) add subtle texture and help maintain stitch definition throughout the garment.

Yarn and Materials

This project is designed to work with Molly Klein Design Sweet Tea Yarns mini skein bundles, specifically requiring 6 mini skeins of 20 grams each (90 yards per skein). The yarn composition is 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon, making it durable and easy-care. The yarn weight is 4-ply, a standard workhorse weight that knits at a moderate gauge suitable for garment construction.

The nylon content provides durability and elasticity, while the Superwash Merino offers softness and breathability. This fiber blend is practical for a frequently-worn casual tee. The pattern is flexible and encourages the use of leftover sock yarn or any mini skeins in the appropriate weight, making it an excellent stash-busting project.

Additional Notions and Tools

Beyond yarn, this project requires standard knitting notions and tools: stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and raglan increases, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and any necessary seaming, scissors for cutting yarn, and a measuring tape for checking finished measurements and gauge.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to knitters new to garment construction. While the top-down seamless method and raglan shaping might seem advanced, the straightforward stitch pattern and clear construction method make it an excellent introduction to garment knitting. Beginners will gain valuable skills in working both flat and in the round, managing color changes, and understanding basic garment shaping.
