Product Description
This project has been a labor of love and I am excited to share it with you! This is my favorite garment and definitely my proudest achievement. I hope you love it too. Many thanks to my tech editor, Meaghan Schmaltz, my graphic designer, Laura Hughey-Hopkins, and to my test knitters, Marieke Doherty and Nina Todaro. This pattern release never would of happened without all of you. I also need to mention Nancy Marchant who creates lovely stitch patterns to design with. I owe my love of brioche to her...
The Yin & Yang Poncho has an added feature of having reversible sides, thanks to the brioche stitch patterns. It is knitted in a rectangular shape and then seamed into a poncho.
This poncho is knit using superwash wool, I strongly suggest you measure your work by hanging it vertically while you measure due to the elasticity of the fabric.

This is a great garment goes with anything in your closet. Some days you feel a little yin, some days a little yang. Enjoy!
Yin & Yang Brioche Poncho by Kim - Roving Fibers Adventures
What is Being Made
The Yin & Yang Brioche Poncho is a versatile knitted garment designed by Kim from Roving Fibers Adventures. This poncho is constructed by knitting a rectangular panel and then seaming it into a poncho shape. The finished rectangle measures approximately 24 inches (61 cm) in width and 48 inches (122 cm) in length when laid flat, though the length expands when the piece is held vertically due to fabric elasticity. The poncho features a unique reversible design, allowing it to be worn with either side facing outward, making it a practical and stylish layering piece suitable for wearing over warm clothing while maintaining secure positioning on the shoulders—an advantage over traditional shawls.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs the brioche stitch as its primary technique. The brioche stitch creates the reversible quality of the poncho, with stitch patterns repeating every 80 rows (equivalent to 40 brioche rows). This repeating pattern structure allows knitters to customize the poncho size by adjusting the number of repeats; the featured sample was knitted with 5.5 repeats. The rectangular construction method simplifies the overall knitting process before the seaming step transforms it into the final poncho silhouette. Because the yarn used is superwash wool with natural elasticity, the designer recommends measuring the work vertically while it hangs to obtain accurate measurements rather than measuring while the piece lies flat.
Stitches Used
- Brioche Stitch – The primary stitch pattern creating the reversible texture and visual interest of the poncho
Materials
The Yin & Yang Brioche Poncho is designed to be knitted with worsted weight yarn, specifically superwash wool as specified in the pattern materials section. The superwash treatment makes the yarn easy to care for while maintaining the elasticity that contributes to the poncho's drape and fit. Standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required to achieve the correct gauge for this intermediate project.
