Product Description
This is a cuff down sock pattern, worked in one piece, from the cuff down to the toe. Casting on requires using a stretchy cast-on method. The cuff of the socks is knitted first, before moving onto the leg, the heel, the gusset, then the foot and finally finishing on the toe. Kitchener stitch is used to close the stitches at the toe.
Instructions for the cuff, leg, gusset and instep of these socks are provided in both written and charted format. However, instructions for the heel and toe are written only.
The brickwork pattern on these socks was inspired by the name of the yarn colour - Yellow Brick Road. I have always enjoyed watching the Wizard of Oz so when I saw this yarn colour for sale by Felt Fusion, I just could not resist. This yarn has been lying in my stash for some time patiently waiting to be knitted into a brickwork patterned pair of socks.
I also knit a 2nd pair of these socks using the Yellow Brick Road colourway by Kernow Designs which was delightful to knit with.

Project Overview
The Yellow Brick Road Socks are a beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed to create a charming pair of socks featuring a classic brickwork stitch pattern. Inspired by the iconic yarn colorway name and the designer's love of the Wizard of Oz, these socks showcase how a thoughtfully chosen yarn can inspire creative stitch selection. The pattern has been successfully knitted in two different sock yarn brands, demonstrating its versatility and reliability across quality yarn options.
What Is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting a complete pair of socks from cuff to toe. The design is offered in three finished sizes to accommodate different foot measurements: Small with a 7-inch foot circumference, Medium with an 8-inch foot circumference, and Large with a 9-inch foot circumference. The corresponding stitch counts are 56 stitches for Small, 64 stitches for Medium, and 72 stitches for Large, allowing knitters to select the appropriate size for their intended wearer.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Yellow Brick Road Socks feature a brickwork stitch pattern as the primary design element. This classic stitch creates the visual appearance of offset bricks, adding visual interest and texture to the finished socks. The brickwork pattern is a traditional technique that works well for sock knitting and is accessible to beginner-level knitters. The pattern construction uses the standard sock knitting method worked on double pointed needles, which allows for seamless, circular knitting in the round.
Materials Required
Knitters have two yarn options for this pattern, both specifically designed for sock knitting:
- Option 1: 317 meters (349 yards) of Felt Fusion Silver Sparkle Sock Yarn in the Yellow Brick Road colorway
- Option 2: 315 meters (347 yards) of Kernow Designs Sock Yarn in the Yellow Brick Road colorway
Both yarns are 4-ply weight, which is the standard weight for sock knitting and provides the appropriate fabric density and drape for comfortable, durable socks. The yardage requirements are nearly identical between the two options, making them interchangeable for this pattern.
Additional materials needed include 2.25mm double pointed needles for working the socks in the round, and optionally, one stitch marker to help track the beginning of each round during knitting.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner-level, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to sock construction. The use of 4-ply yarn with appropriately sized needles creates a manageable fabric that is neither too delicate nor too dense for developing knitters to handle comfortably. The brickwork stitch pattern, while visually appealing, remains straightforward enough for beginners to execute successfully while still providing an engaging project.
