Product Description
Yarnshine is a shawlette designed to let your yarn shine. Whether you prefer the classic look of a solid-coloured yarn, the subtle colour shifts of a semi-solid or tonal yarn, or the fun of a multi-coloured yarn, Yarnshine lets the yarn speak for itself.
The asymmetrical triangle shape can be wrapped like a scarf, worn bandana-style, or wrapped around the shoulders and fastened with a pin. The pattern itself is easy without being boring. Eyelet borders define the stocking stitch segments which grow as the shawlette lengthens to give pleasing dimensions to each segment.
Given the natural tendency of stocking stitch to curl, I recommend using a yarn with a good proportion of natural fibre which will hold a block well so that when you block it flat it stays that way!

What Is Being Made
The Yarnshine Shawlette is an asymmetrical triangle shawlette designed to showcase the beauty of your chosen yarn. Whether you select a variegated yarn with multiple colors or a simple solid shade, this versatile accessory is engineered to let the yarn's characteristics shine through. The finished shawlette measures 70 inches along the long side, making it a substantial yet wearable triangular wrap.
Design Philosophy and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project features eyelet details that add visual interest and texture to the piece. The asymmetrical triangle shape provides a modern, contemporary silhouette that works beautifully as a shawl, wrap, or decorative accessory. The design specifically accounts for the natural curling tendency of stocking stitch by incorporating eyelets and recommending appropriate yarn fiber content to ensure the finished piece blocks flat and maintains its shape.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Yarnshine Shawlette employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance:
- Stocking Stitch: The primary fabric base that creates a smooth, classic knit texture
- Eyelet Details: Decorative openwork elements that add visual dimension and help the piece lay flat
- Yarn Overs (YO): Used to create the eyelet holes and lacy sections throughout the design
- Decreases: Including slip-slip-knit (SSK) and knit-two-together (k2tog) techniques to shape the asymmetrical triangle
- Increases: Knit-front-and-back (kfb) stitches to expand the shawlette during construction
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and stitch techniques:
- k – knit stitch
- p – purl stitch
- YO – yarn over; creates decorative holes and increases
- SSK – slip-slip-knit; slip one stitch knitwise, slip a second stitch knitwise, return both to left-hand needle and knit them together for a left-leaning decrease
- kfb – knit front and back; increase one stitch by knitting into the front and back of the same stitch
- k2tog – knit two stitches together for a right-leaning decrease
Materials and Tools Required
The Yarnshine Shawlette is worked in 4-ply weight yarn, also known as fingering weight, making it suitable for delicate, detailed work. The pattern requires approximately 400 to 430 yards of yarn, allowing for flexibility depending on your specific yarn choice and desired finished dimensions.
Essential tools include 3.75mm knitting needles for working with the 4-ply weight yarn, and a darning needle for weaving in ends after completion. Kirsten McTeer recommends selecting yarn with a good proportion of natural fiber content, as these fibers hold blocking shape better than synthetic alternatives, ensuring your finished shawlette maintains its flat, elegant appearance after wet blocking.
Yarn and Fiber Considerations
The designer specifically advises choosing yarn carefully for this project. Natural fibers or yarn blends with substantial natural fiber content are recommended because they respond better to blocking and will hold their shape permanently once blocked flat. This consideration is particularly important given the stocking stitch base, which has an inherent tendency to curl at the edges. Whether you choose a vibrant variegated yarn to showcase color variation or a classic solid shade, the eyelet details and asymmetrical shaping will complement your yarn choice beautifully.
