Product Description
Jane the Virgin came on the scene and completely stole my heart with its heartfelt, often hilarious, storytelling…and its incredible color palette. I’ve been consumed with the idea of making a set of socks to represent each and every one of the varied and lovable characters, and to immerse myself in the show’s color story!
First up is Xiomara, which features a geometric beaded cuff and a deep, deep vee feature on the front of the leg. The back of the leg has a cabled seam, framed by ribbed gusset increases, and the design is loosely mirrored on the foot.
Xiomara is worked from the cuff down, with a fleegle heel, and finished with a wedge toe. Both charts and written instructions are provided. (Because of this, the pattern is quite long! I’ve grouped the written instructions for each size together so you can easily skip printing the parts you don’t need.)
Xiomara Socks by Lauren Rose
What is Being Made
Xiomara is an advanced knitted sock pattern designed by Lauren Rose (laur_oftheblings). These are fun and flirty socks featuring decorative glitzy beads, simple cables that create a distinctive deep vee shaping, and cable detailing running up the back of the leg. The pattern is available in four sizes to fit foot circumferences of 7, 8, 9, or 10 inches (18, 20.5, 23, or 25.5 centimeters), worked with approximately 1 inch of negative ease for a secure, comfortable fit.
Knitting Techniques Used
This advanced sock pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques. The design incorporates cable work to create the signature deep vee shaping and back leg detailing. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases, including knit two together (k2tog) and purl two together (p2tog) reductions, as well as make one knit (m1-knit) and make one purl (m1-purl) increases. The pattern requires adjusting stitches across the instep and heel needles to accommodate the instep chart, demonstrating the technical complexity of the design. Beads are incorporated throughout for a glitzy, decorative element.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Knit (k): The fundamental knit stitch forms the base fabric
- Purl (p): Purl stitches create texture and are used in shaping techniques
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Purl two together (p2tog): A purl-based decrease for structured shaping
- Make one knit (m1-knit): An increase created by picking up the bar between stitches from back to front and knitting
- Make one purl (m1-purl): An increase created by picking up the bar between stitches from front to back and purling
- Cable stitches: Used to create the deep vee and back leg cable details
Materials and Yarn
Xiomara is designed to be worked in light fingering weight yarn, available in both 3-ply and 4-ply constructions. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using NanoStitch Laboratory Scientific Sock yarn in the Rachel Carson colorway. The designer encourages knitters to choose their loudest or sparkliest sock yarn to showcase the glitzy bead embellishments and cable work. Specific yardage requirements are provided in the downloadable PDF pattern.
Pattern Format and Community
Xiomara is offered as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The pattern includes complete abbreviations and instructions for all four sizes. Knitters are encouraged to share their finished projects on Instagram by tagging @laur_oftheblings and using the hashtags #xiomarasock and #lotbknits to connect with the designer and broader knitting community.
