Product Description
The Xcapade Poncho is the second design in the Xcapade Collection. The X-Stitch is a modification of a stich diagram discovered on Pinterest. It's an intermediate stitch that is easy to remember, so this project will work up quicker than it seems.
Pictures are included on how to create the neck opening without chaining.
It's designed to fit most sizes, and instructions are included on how to adjust the length and width. There's even three styling options suggested!
Be sure to read notes and special stitches before beginning.
The gauge is listed above based on the stitches used. If you are able to match gauge of the double crochet, then the suggested yardage should be sufficient if following the exact pattern. 12 dc = 4", 3 X-Sts = 4.75" 6 rows = 4.25
*This pattern is not to be duplicated or resold, and not to be reproduced commercially. You may sell finished products on Etsy, at farmers markets, and craft fairs, but please credit Creations By Courtney as the pattern’s author.

What Is Being Made
The X-capade Poncho is an intermediate-level crochet garment designed as a lightweight, wearable cape-style poncho. This piece measures 40 inches wide by 57 inches in total length, with each half spanning 20 inches wide, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is worked entirely using the crochet technique. The design incorporates a special chainless starting method to create a polished foundation, and the garment is constructed using a combination of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build texture and structure throughout the piece.
Stitches Used
The X-capade Poncho utilizes the following crochet stitches:
- Double crochet (dc) – forms the primary fabric structure
- Treble crochet (tr) – adds height and creates decorative elements
- Half double crochet (hdc) – provides transition stitching
- Single crochet (sc) – used for finishing and shaping
- Chain (ch) – creates foundation and spacing
- Slip stitch (slst) – joins rounds and secures stitches
- Foundation double crochet (fdc) – an alternative starting technique
- Chainless Starting Double Crochet (CSDC) – a special technique that eliminates the traditional chain foundation for a more refined edge
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The X-capade Poncho pattern calls for 8 skeins of Baby Bee Hushabye Solid yarn in the Toy Elephant colorway. This yarn is a blend of 50% acrylic and 50% cotton, offering a balanced combination of durability and breathability. Each skein provides 208 yards (190 meters) and weighs 3.5 ounces (100 grams).
The recommended yarn weight for this project is aran or worsted weight, which creates a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for a poncho silhouette. A US J10 hook (6.0mm) or the size needed to obtain proper gauge is required for construction.
Gauge and Sizing
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies the following gauge measurements:
- 12 double crochet stitches = 4 inches (10 centimeters)
- 3 X-stitches = 4.75 inches (12 centimeters)
- 6 rows worked in pattern = 4.25 inches (11 centimeters)
Additional Tools and Notions
Beyond the yarn and hook, the pattern requires a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and 4 to 6 locking stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the project.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the X-capade Poncho is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple stitch types and follow more complex pattern instructions. The inclusion of the chainless starting double crochet technique adds a refinement that elevates this project beyond beginner level.
