Product Description
This lightweight triangular shawl incorporates a bobble lace stitch that comes to us from Japan. It is knit top down, and the stitches cause a pretty and delicate scallop at the neckline. The Bobble edging makes this triangular shawl truly unique. While the shawl looks difficult to knit, it is not hard, and is suitable for Intermediate knitters.
The finished shawl is approximately 86 inches across the top and 33 inches at the deepest point and is knitted out of a light weight fingering yarn.
The stitches are both charted out and written out.
The pattern also contains instructions for how to make Bobbles using the crochet hook method, as well as tassels and edgings.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming some lace experience)
The sample was knit out of Mrs. Crosby Plays in Train Case, in colorway Monkey Orchid, however any lightweight fingering yarn will work for this pattern.
Woodstock Bobble Lace Cuneate Shawl by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
The Woodstock Bobble Lace Cuneate is a lightweight wrap-style shawl designed by Linda Lehman. This knitted shawl features a cuneate (wedge) construction and showcases delicate bobble lace stitch patterns combined with cable techniques. The design is versatile enough for wearing or gifting, and the pattern includes instructions for optional edging and tassels to customize the finished piece.
Craft and Project Type
This is a knitting project classified as an intermediate-level shawl. The pattern assumes knitters have foundational knowledge of basic knitting and purling techniques, as well as experience with lace work and cable stitches. The cuneate construction method creates a geometric wedge shape that drapes elegantly when worn.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Woodstock Bobble Lace Cuneate employs several key knitting techniques:
- Bobble lace stitch patterns — decorative raised bobbles combined with openwork lace
- Cable lace combinations — twisted cable stitches integrated with lace elements for visual interest and texture
- Lace work — yarn overs and decreases creating the characteristic open, airy fabric
- Cuneate shaping — wedge-based construction that builds from a narrow point outward
The pattern description notes that this bobble lace stitch is both delicate and sturdy, balancing aesthetic beauty with structural integrity. Optional edging and tassel finishing techniques are also included in the pattern instructions.
Materials and Tools Required
To complete the smaller wrap version of this shawl, knitters will need:
- Yarn: 1300 to 1500 yards of light weight fingering yarn (3-ply weight)
- Needles: U.S. size #5 (3.5mm) needles with at least a 32-inch cable length for accommodating the growing number of stitches
- Notions and tools: Stitch markers (optional), row counter (optional), and a darning needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The recommended gauge for this project is approximately 5.5 stitches per inch and 8½ rows per inch when working the lace stitch and moderately blocking the finished fabric. While gauge is not considered critically important for this design, variations in personal gauge will affect the final dimensions of the completed shawl. Knitters are advised to swatch and measure before beginning the full project.
