Product Description
These woodland legwarmers feature some cute critters amidst a variety of fair isle bands of differing widths to add visual interest. Designed to use up leftover bits of sock yarns, the pair of shaped legwarmers used less than 25g/110yds of each color. Due to the large stitch count of the animal band repeats, only one size is offered.
For smaller legwarmers, use smaller needles for a tighter gauge. For larger legwarmers, consider using heavier weight yarn and/or larger needles. The bulk of the pattern is in chart form. Tested by 8 other knitters who rated it as advanced beginner to intermediate skill level.
SIZE: Adult M: Measurements at rest after blocking: 15” 38 cm tall, 9” 22.75 cm cuff circumferences, 14” 35.5 cm calf circumference. Equally cute scrunched up if made with positive ease, or worn over leggings with negative ease.

What is Being Made
The Woodland Legwarmers are a pair of shaped legwarmers designed for adult medium sizing. These legwarmers feature charming woodland critters integrated into a series of fair isle bands of varying widths, creating visual interest through color and pattern work. The finished legwarmers measure 15 inches [38 cm] tall with a 9-inch [22.75 cm] cuff circumference and a 14-inch [35.5 cm] calf circumference. The design is versatile enough to be worn scrunched up or over leggings, accommodating both positive and negative ease depending on the wearer's preference.
Yarn and Materials
The Woodland Legwarmers are designed to use fingering weight yarn, making them an excellent project for knitters looking to use up leftover sock yarn. The total yardage required is approximately 130 grams and 568 yards, distributed across multiple colors—approximately 25 grams and 110 yards per color. The pattern is modeled in 15 different colors, with a color key provided in the pattern. This efficient yardage requirement makes the project accessible for stash busting and experimenting with various color combinations.
Techniques and Stitches
The primary knitting technique featured in the Woodland Legwarmers is fair isle colorwork, a traditional stranded knitting method that allows multiple colors to be worked within a single row. The pattern incorporates fair isle bands of differing widths throughout the legwarmers, creating a balanced and visually interesting design. The animal motifs are worked using the fair isle technique, allowing the woodland critters to stand out against the background colors.
The base stitch used is stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric ideal for colorwork patterns. The gauge is established at 34 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches [10 cm] in stockinette stitch on smaller needles after blocking. The legwarmers are shaped, meaning increases and decreases are worked to create the proper fit through the calf and cuff areas.
Needles and Gauge Adjustments
The pattern specifies smaller needles for achieving the correct gauge of 34 stitches and 40 rows to 4 inches [10 cm] after blocking. The design accommodates gauge flexibility for customization: knitters seeking smaller legwarmers can use smaller needles to achieve a tighter gauge, while those desiring larger legwarmers can opt for heavier weight yarn and/or larger needles. This flexibility allows the pattern to be adapted beyond the single offered size, making it accessible to a wider range of knitters.
Difficulty Level and Pattern Characteristics
Rated as an intermediate project, the Woodland Legwarmers require solid foundational knitting skills, particularly comfort with fair isle colorwork and managing multiple colors within rows. The large stitch count of the animal band repeats necessitates careful attention to pattern reading and color changes. Due to the complexity of the motifs, only one size is offered in the pattern, though adjustments can be made through needle and yarn weight modifications as described above.
The pattern is presented in downloadable PDF format, making it convenient for digital access and printing. Blocking is recommended after completion to achieve the specified finished measurements and to even out the colorwork.
