What Is Being Made

The Wood Sprite is a triangular knitted shawl designed by Ashley Knowlton. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a decorative shoulder wrap featuring an unconventional construction method that combines a traditional triangular base with an additional wedge section. The finished shawl measures 26 inches (66 centimeters) wide and 13 inches (33 centimeters) deep from the cast-on edge to the edging, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Techniques Used

The Wood Sprite employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The shawl features an unusual pattern of strategic increases that create ruffles and pleats throughout the fabric. These increases are distributed across a garden-inspired motif, giving the piece organic movement and dimension. The design incorporates nupps (small bobble-like decorative elements) scattered sparingly throughout the pattern for added texture and visual interest. The construction uses a two-stitch edge worked consistently in Garter Stitch on all rows to create a stable, finished border.

The pattern is worked from charted instructions, with specific attention paid to spine stitches (one stitch positioned between each wedge section). On wrong-side rows, these spine stitches are purled during specific chart sections (Rows 9-17 and 27-39 of Chart A, and all rows of Charts B and C), while they are worked in Garter Stitch on remaining rows. This intentional stitch variation creates subtle definition between the shawl's structural sections.

Materials

The Wood Sprite requires 420 yards (385 meters) of fingering weight yarn, which is equivalent to one 4-ounce (113-gram) skein. The pattern was designed and photographed using Huckleberry Knits Willow yarn in the colorway Meadowsweet, a blend of 80% Blue-Faced Leicester and 20% nylon that provides both softness and durability.

Needles required are US 4 (3.5 millimeter) needles, appropriately sized for working with fingering weight yarn and creating the fabric density needed for the shawl's structured increases and textured elements. The 4-ply yarn weight combined with these needles produces the delicate, refined appearance suitable for the intricate charted pattern work and decorative details.

Pattern Structure

The pattern is presented in charted format across multiple sections (Charts A, B, and C), allowing knitters to visualize the placement of increases, nupps, and stitch variations. The chart-based approach is typical of intermediate-level shawl patterns and provides clear guidance for executing the complex arrangement of ruffles and pleats.
