What Is Being Made

Wolf Rock is a semi-circular shawl designed by Charlotte Lorenzi. This intermediate-level knitting project creates an elegant wrap using a classic semi-circular construction method. The shawl is suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work with lace patterns and shaping techniques simultaneously.

Design and Construction Method

This shawl is shaped using Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi Shawl Method, a traditional approach to creating semi-circular shawls with mathematical precision. The pattern begins with a small number of stitches and incorporates increase rows at set points throughout the design. These strategic increases double the stitch count each time, allowing the shawl to expand evenly from the center outward.

The Pi Shawl Method offers a significant advantage for knitters: it separates the shaping process from the lace pattern work. This means you do not need to keep track of shaping the shawl at the same time as working the lace sections, making the knitting process more straightforward and less error-prone.

Stitches and Techniques

Wolf Rock incorporates several knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:

• Lace patterns worked at specific sections throughout the shawl
• Slipped stitch sections that appear in the later portions of the pattern
• Increase rows positioned at set intervals to maintain the semi-circular shaping

The combination of lace and slipped stitch work creates a sophisticated finished piece with varied texture and drape.

Materials Required

Needles: One 3.5mm circular needle, at least 80cm (32 inches) long. The circular needle accommodates the increasing stitch count as the shawl grows.

Yarn: Fingering weight yarn in one or two colors. The total yardage required is approximately 780 yards (691 meters). The sample shown was knitted using Malabrigo Mechita fingering weight yarn in two colors:

• Color A (Anniversario): Approximately 98g / 411 yards / 380 meters
• Color B (Hojas): Approximately 82g / 369 yards / 311 meters

Note that the sample used nearly all of the Color A yarn. Knitters with shorter yardage skeins or those working at a looser gauge have flexibility in their color placement—you may use Color B for sections before the first lace section or omit some Color A rows in the later slipped stitch sections to adjust yardage requirements.

Yarn Weight Options

This pattern is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply fingering weight yarns, which create a delicate, drapey fabric ideal for shawl construction. Fingering weight yarn produces fine, detailed stitch definition, allowing lace and slipped stitch patterns to show clearly.
