I used YarnArt Ideal and Alize Bella - these two yarns are identical.

You will need:

• Body color yarn - 10-15 grams (30-50 yards)

• Black yarn - 20-30 grams (60 - 90 yards)

• Purple yarn - less than 5 grams (5-10 yards)

• Hair color yarn - 10-15 grams (30-50 yards)

• 4-5 mm safety eyes

• Needle for sewing in ends, stitching pieces together.

• Polyester fiberfill for stuffing

• Pins

You can skip the wire and make your doll without a frame. This is an easier way, but your doll will not be able to stand or pose.

Witch Doll Amigurumi by Natalia Kononenko

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet amigurumi witch doll pattern designed by Natalia Kononenko. Amigurumi refers to the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and dolls. This particular pattern creates a witch-themed doll character, suitable for collectors, decorative display, or as a handmade gift.

Craft and Primary Technique

The project uses crochet as its primary construction method. Crochet is a fiber art that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn, building fabric from the ground up. This technique is ideal for amigurumi because it creates a tight, dense fabric that holds stuffing securely and allows for precise shaping of three-dimensional forms.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern employs several specialized crochet techniques:

  • Continuous spiral rounds: Rather than joining rounds with a slip stitch, this pattern is worked in continuous rounds using a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round. This method creates seamless transitions between rounds.
  • Single crochet (sc): The foundational stitch used throughout the doll construction.
  • Back Loop Only (BLO): A technique where the hook enters only the back loop of a stitch, creating textured ridges in the fabric.
  • Front Loop Only (FLO): Working through only the front loop of stitches to create additional texture and dimension.
  • Yarn color changes: The pattern incorporates color changes executed in the final step of the last single crochet of each color section.
  • Needle join finishing: The pattern is secured using a needle join method for a professional, polished finish.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is designed for sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates fine, detailed stitches ideal for amigurumi work. Sport weight yarn allows for precise stitch definition and smooth curves on small dolls. You will need a crochet hook appropriate for sport weight yarn (typically sizes B/1 to D/3) and a yarn needle for finishing and joining pieces. Fiberfill stuffing is required to fill the doll as you work, creating a firm, three-dimensional form.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty. While amigurumi basics involve simple stitches, this witch doll requires experience with continuous spiral construction, color changes, selective loop techniques (BLO and FLO), and the ability to stuff and shape pieces evenly. Crafters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and managing stitch markers before attempting this project.

This is a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing you to access the complete instructions digitally and print them for reference while crocheting.
