Product Description
I fell in love with some sparkly yarn at Sin City Knits in Las Vegas and immediately saw myself wearing this cowl to watch the fireworks on The Strip for New Year's Eve! Mostly I just wear it when I want to brighten up the winter days at work. It is knit in the round in stockinette stitch, with garter stitch borders and featuring simple eyelet rows to add texture. You don't have to use a sparkly yarn but it adds extra glam!
Needles: 16" circulars or double pointed needles, size 5/3.75mm or size to get the gauge
Gauge: 23 sts & 25 rows = 4" in pattern stitch
You'll also need 1 stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Winter Glam Cowl by Heather Cox
Project Overview
The Winter Glam Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitting project designed by Heather Cox that combines sparkle and warmth for winter wear. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile cowl that can be worn as a neck accessory or pulled up over the head as a hood, making it both a fashion statement and a functional layering piece for cold weather.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a cylindrical cowl worked in the round from the bottom up. The finished piece is long enough to provide coverage as a traditional cowl around the neck or can be extended upward to function as a hood, adding both glamorous sparkle and practical warmth to winter outfits. The design is particularly suited for brightening dark winter days with its shimmering yarn composition.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Winter Glam Cowl employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The cowl is worked in the round, which creates a seamless tubular fabric without the need for seaming. The pattern uses a combination of two basic stitch patterns to create visual interest while maintaining accessibility for newer knitters.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch - The primary stitch used throughout most of the cowl, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side
- Garter Stitch - Used in combination with stockinette to add texture and visual variation to the design
- Eyelet Rows - Simple eyelet stitches are incorporated at strategic points to keep the pattern interesting and add delicate openwork details to the cowl
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for Arkansas Yarn Co. Sparkling Party in My Mailbox yarn, a super sparkle yarn with a blend of 70% merino, 20% nylon, and 10% stellina. One ball containing 438 yards is required to complete the project. The yarn weight is classified as 4-ply, making it suitable for creating fabric with good drape and definition.
Needles and Notions: Knitters can choose between U.S. size 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles or a 16-inch circular needle for working in the round. Additional supplies include one stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Pattern Specifications
The pattern begins with casting on 133 stitches, which are then joined in the round using a stitch marker to indicate the round's starting point. The gauge is 23 stitches and 25 rows per 4 inches, which is important for achieving the correct finished size and drape of the cowl.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Winter Glam Cowl is accessible to knitters new to the craft. The combination of basic stitches, straightforward construction in the round, and simple eyelet details make this an excellent pattern for building foundational knitting skills while creating a wearable, glamorous finished object.
