Winged Unicorn Crochet Toy by Heather Kumpf

What is Being Made

The Winged Unicorn is an amigurumi-style stuffed toy designed by Heather Kumpf and published by Violets&Heather in 2020. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a finished unicorn measuring approximately 20 inches tall when made with medium weight yarn and a 3.75 mm hook. The design features a complete unicorn figure with wings, mane, and tail, making it a decorative plush toy suitable for display or gifting.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques, with the majority of the work completed using continuous rounds rather than traditional joined rounds. This method allows for seamless, spiral construction throughout most of the project. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and recommends using a stitch marker to track your position within each round, which is essential when working continuously. The toy is constructed by crocheting individual pieces separately and then assembling them together to form the complete winged unicorn figure.

Crochet Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern utilizes standard crochet abbreviations including:

  • MR - Magic Ring (a foundational technique for starting amigurumi projects in the round)
  • ch - Chain stitch
  • sc - Single crochet

These fundamental stitches form the basis of amigurumi construction, creating the dense, sturdy fabric necessary for stuffed toys.

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: Medium weight (4) yarn is used throughout this project. The pattern requires approximately 20 ounces of body color yarn and 7 ounces of mane and tail color yarn. The designer used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Ivory for the body and Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in Scuba for accent colors.

Crochet Hook: A 3.75 mm hook is specified for use with medium weight yarn to achieve the correct finished dimensions.

Notions and Finishing Supplies:

  • 24mm Safety Eyes for facial features
  • Tapestry Needle for weaving in yarn ends and sewing pieces together
  • Stitch Marker to track rounds during continuous crochet work
  • Scissors for cutting yarn
  • PolyFiber Filling for stuffing the toy
  • Poly Pellet Beads (optional) for added weight and realistic movement
  • Nylon Stocking to contain poly pellet beads if used
  • Hot Glue Gun (optional) for attaching eyes and assembling pieces as an alternative to sewing

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as Intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-piece amigurumi construction and assembly. The continuous round technique and stitch marker usage require comfort with tracking stitches and maintaining consistent tension throughout the project.
