Product Description
Slip a little cozy on the foot of your wine glass and youâll never see those red wine or moisture rings on your furniture again! These make a great gift as a set for your imbibing friends. This little design was first published without the photos and description as a mystery knit-along.
Use one of the suggested yarns (Elann Espirt or Cascade Fixation) for best results! The elastic will prevent sagging soggy-diaper syndrome if the coaster gets especially wet.
This project uses a crocheted cast on by Emily Ocker because it is tidy and is joined in a round. If you are not familiar with this method there are many resources available in lace knitting reference books and online including YouTube.
Wine Glass Slip-on Coasters by Terry Morris
What is Being Made
Wine Glass Slip-on Coasters are small, functional knitted accessories designed to slip over the foot of a wine glass. These coasters prevent red wine stains and moisture rings from marking furniture surfaces. The finished coasters measure approximately 2¾ inches (7cm) unstretched and are ideal for gifting as a coordinated set to wine enthusiasts.
Craft and Techniques
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs several key techniques. The pattern uses a crocheted cast-on method designed by Emily Ocker, which creates a tidy edge and allows the piece to be joined in a round—a technique particularly suited to small circular projects like coasters. The construction method involves working in the round using double-pointed needles, a fundamental skill for creating seamless tubular garments.
The design incorporates strategic gauge changes and needle transitions to shape the coaster appropriately for its function. Working with sport weight yarn and elastic-blend fibers requires understanding how these materials behave during knitting and finishing.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knitted fabric. The pattern achieves its gauge of 6 stitches per 1 inch over stockinette stitch, establishing the foundation for the coaster's dimensions and drape. The crocheted cast-on provides the starting edge, and a crochet hook is used during the finishing process.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern calls for a small amount of sport weight cotton yarn blended with elastic fibers. Specific recommended yarns include Cascade Fixation or Elann Esprit. The elastic component is essential to the design—it prevents the coaster from sagging or developing what the pattern humorously refers to as "soggy-diaper syndrome" when exposed to moisture.
The project requires two sets of US double-pointed needles: a set of US Size 2 (2.75mm) and a set of US Size 5 (3.75mm), or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. A size F crochet hook is also necessary for the cast-on and finishing techniques.

Pattern Notes
The designer emphasizes using one of the suggested yarns for optimal results, as the elastic content directly impacts the coaster's ability to maintain its shape and prevent sagging when wet. This project is suitable for knitters with intermediate experience who are comfortable working with double-pointed needles, joining in the round, and executing a crocheted cast-on technique.
