Product Description
My 3 'Berry' shawl designs have been published together in a small ebook - The Berry Shawl Collection. This is the fingering weight version of the original Bilberry Shawl. This version gives a shallower but wide shawl by extra increases and has a slightly different picot cast off. The sample is made using The Natural Dye Studio Precious 4 ply which is a silk yarn and gives fabulous drape. The colour is Red Brook. This pattern is relatively easy, so it is suitable for a beginner knitter. Increases are by yarn overs, the body has sections of eyelets made by yarn overs and the edging is a simple picot cast off. It is an easy lace design. The finished size is approximately 160cm by 50cm after blocking. Requires approx 350m of sock yarn
Winberry Shawl by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
The Winberry Shawl is a knitted shawl designed by Agrarian Artisan as a fingering weight adaptation of the original Bilberry Shawl. This version produces a shallower but wider shawl through additional increases worked throughout the pattern, making it an excellent choice for crafters seeking a generous, wearable wrap with a lighter drape than traditional shawl designs.
Craft and Project Type
This is a knitting project classified at intermediate difficulty level. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, allowing crafters to work at their own pace with complete pattern instructions included.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Winberry Shawl employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create its structure and decorative elements:
- Yarn overs (yo) – Used to create the lace and openwork details characteristic of shawl designs
- Knit stitches (k) – The foundational stitch throughout the pattern
- Purl stitches (p) – Used to create texture and reversibility in sections
- Knit two together (k2tog) – A right-leaning decrease used to shape the shawl
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – A left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog for balanced shaping
- Stocking stitch – The primary fabric base, worked over blocked tension of approximately 9 stitches and 14 rows per 5 centimeters
- Picot cast off – A decorative edge finish that creates a delicate, finished appearance along the shawl border
- Marker placement and slipping (pm, sm) – Used to track pattern repeats and shaping sections throughout the knitting process
Materials and Specifications
The Winberry Shawl requires 4 ply yarn in a fingering weight classification. The designer's sample was created using The Natural Dye Studio Precious 4 ply, a luxurious 100% silk yarn available in 100-gram skeins with 400 meters of yardage. The pattern requires a minimum of 320 meters of yarn, though the sample used 80 grams of the total skein weight.
Essential tools include 4mm circular needles measuring at least 100 centimeters in length to accommodate the expanding stitch count as the shawl widens. Crafters will also need 2 stitch markers to track pattern sections and a tapestry needle for sewing in ends upon completion.
Pattern Notes
Crafters are advised to read the complete pattern through to the end before beginning work. The pattern includes detailed abbreviations for all stitches and techniques, with particular attention given to the ssk decrease, which may also be worked as s1k1psso (slip one knitwise, knit one, pass slipped stitch over) for those unfamiliar with the standard ssk method. The shawl is worked on the right side (RS) and benefits from blocking to achieve the specified tension and final dimensions.
