Product Description
Wildgrass Hat is a great stash-busting hat for any single skeins of DK weight yarn you have laying around! This hat was originally designed in Happy-Go-Knitty Foxhow yarn which has unfortunately been discontinued. I made my second version (the blue version) as a gift out of some other discontinued 4ply yarn held double. Both versions worked out great, so you can also stash bust single skeins of 4ply with this pattern! This hat puts a modern twist on the classic Celtic-style cable, using a background of reverse stockinette stitch. I always wanted to use this beautiful cable on something, and I absolutely love it as a feature on this hat. Enjoy :)

Wildgrass Hat by Alanna Penk
What is Being Made
The Wildgrass Hat is a classic knitted beanie designed by Alanna Penk featuring a distinctive celtic-style cable pattern. This one-skein wonder hat offers a sophisticated look with decorative cable work set against a clean reverse stockinette background. The design includes a fold-up ribbed brim for a polished finish, and knitters have the option to add a pom pom to the crown while still having yarn remaining from a single skein.
Construction Method
The Wildgrass Hat is knit from the bottom up in the round, a popular construction technique that creates a seamless, tubular garment. This method allows for easy stitch marker placement and consistent tension throughout the crown shaping. Working in the round eliminates the need for seaming and provides a professional finish typical of quality hat construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used
- Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Forms the clean background of the hat, created by purling on right-side rounds to achieve the characteristic textured appearance
- Celtic-Style Cable Pattern: The decorative focal point of the design, adding visual interest and dimension to the hat
- Ribbed Brim: Provides elasticity and ensures the hat stays securely in place
- Decreases: K2tog (knit two stitches together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) techniques are used for crown shaping to taper the hat to a point
- Pom Pom Construction: Optional embellishment that uses approximately 50 metres of leftover yarn
Materials and Gauge
The Wildgrass Hat is designed to work with DK weight yarn (8ply), with the pattern pictured using Happy Go Knitty Foxhow yarn in the Haystack colorway. The total yardage required is approximately 140 metres (153 yards) without a pom pom, making this an efficient single-skein project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 11 stitches and 15 rows over two inches to ensure proper fit and drape.
Needles and Tools
This intermediate-level hat requires two sets of circular needles: a 3.5mm/US Size 4 circular needle (16 inches long recommended) for the ribbed brim, and a 4mm/US Size 6 circular needle (16 inches long recommended) for the main body. As the crown decreases, knitters transition to 4mm/US Size 6 double-pointed needles (dpns) to accommodate the reducing stitch count. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Wildgrass Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and crown shaping. The pattern requires familiarity with circular needle techniques, basic decreases, and the ability to read cable charts.
