Product Description
Wildflowers is one of my favorite songs by the late Tom Petty; it resonates with me. To be free, to be who we are, without the confinements of who society and social norms think we are “supposed” to be — appreciating our unique qualities. Being happy with who we are, without worry.
Worked in the round, Wildflowers contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.
Wildflowers Socks by rhyFlower Knits
What Is Being Made
Wildflowers is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by rhyFlower Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates fitted socks with a finished circumference of 7.5 to 9 inches (19 to 23 centimeters) around the ball of the foot, accommodating multiple sizes. The sample shown in the pattern was knit using a toe-up construction method on 64 stitches.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs toe-up sock construction, a popular technique that begins knitting at the toe and progresses toward the cuff. This method allows knitters to try on the sock as they work and customize the leg length before binding off. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, a standard approach for seamless sock knitting that creates a continuous tube of fabric.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Wildflowers pattern features a decorative flower stitch as a signature design element. This specialty stitch is created by inserting the right-hand needle into the third stitch down from the second stitch on the left needle to form the flower's center, then drawing through a loop and leaving it on the right-hand needle before knitting the next two stitches. This technique creates dimensional floral motifs throughout the sock. The pattern also uses standard decreases to shape the sock during construction.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Wildflowers requires 300 to 500 yards (274 to 458 meters) of fingering weight yarn, with the yardage varying based on foot length and desired leg height. The suggested yarn is Log House Cottage Kid Lux Smooth, a luxury blend composed of 60% Merino wool, 25% Kid Mohair, and 15% Nylon. The sample shown was knit in a Pink & Purple Variegated colorway using 420 yards (385 meters) of yarn from a 4.2-ounce (120-gram) skein. This yarn blend provides softness, elasticity, and subtle sheen ideal for decorative sock knitting.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for US1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 centimeters) in length, or the size required to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction progress.
Skill Level and Gauge
Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, Wildflowers is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle specialty stitches and sock construction. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, and knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches the pattern's requirements.
