Product Description
This design is worked in traditional aran style cabling with 2/2 ribbed borders. The neckband is also in the same rib. For this design I worked a deep crew neck, folding the neckband in half and stitching it down to the wrong-side making it lovely and cosy.

Wild Willow Knitted Sweater by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
Wild Willow is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Pat Menchini. This pullover jumper is available in five size options to fit chest measurements ranging from 91-97 cm (36-38 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches), with corresponding finished chest measurements of 104 cm to 144 cm (41 inches to 57 inches). The sweater features a consistent sleeve length of 48 cm (19 inches) across all sizes, while the length from shoulder varies slightly between 66 cm and 69 cm (26 inches to 27¼ inches) depending on the size selected.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This sweater project employs fundamental knitting construction methods suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern requires working with two different needle sizes to achieve proper fabric characteristics: smaller 4 mm needles (UK 8, US 6) are used for ribbed sections, while larger 5 mm needles (UK 6, US 8) are used for the main body and sleeves. The use of a cable needle indicates that cable stitch details are incorporated into the design, adding textural interest to the finished garment. Stitch holders are required for managing stitches during construction, suggesting a seamless or partially seamless assembly method.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary stitch, as indicated by the tension measurement of 18 stitches and 20 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stockinette stitch. Cable stitches feature prominently in the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted rope-like textures that provide visual depth and dimension to the sweater. The combination of stockinette stitch with cable work creates a classic, sophisticated aesthetic.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Wild Willow is designed to be knitted using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran yarn in the shade Willow 076. This aran-weight yarn provides approximately 90 metres (98 yards) per 50g ball. Yarn requirements vary by size: smaller sizes require 16 balls, while the largest size requires 20 balls of yarn. Cashmerino yarn offers a luxurious blend of natural fibers, providing softness and drape suitable for a refined sweater design.
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is critical for this project. The pattern specifies a tension of 18 stitches and 20 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) when measured over stockinette stitch using 5 mm needles. Knitters are advised to test their tension before beginning the project. If the test swatch is too loose, a finer needle size should be used; if too tight, a larger needle size should be substituted. Matching the stated tension ensures the finished sweater will fit correctly and drape as intended by the designer.
