Product Description

This swirly hat can be made with any weight yarn, slouchy or not, custom sized to your head, with buttons or without, fitted or beret style, with a pointed top or not. With all these options, you can make it over and over, use up hat-quantity yarn leftovers, or random single skeins, making a totally different hat each time.

It’s constructed from the top down, twisted stitches swirling outwards with yarn over increases, until the hat body is the appropriate width and height for a custom fit. The gauge is measured directly on the hat once enough fabric has been knit, and measurements/stitch counts are then calculated using that gauge.

The brim is knit on sideways around the hat bottom, with decreases attaching it to the hat and essentially binding off the hat body stitches at the same time.

The brim section is charted and written.

Wild is the Wind Knit Hat by Lee Meredith

What is Being Made

Wild is the Wind is a custom-fit knit hat design created by Lee Meredith as part of the Remixed collection. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished hat that adapts to any yarn weight or gauge, making it an exceptionally versatile accessory pattern suitable for a wide range of yarn types and fiber content.

Design Approach and Flexibility

The pattern is specifically engineered to work with recycled yarns and unique fiber blends that may not conform to standard gauge requirements. Rather than relying on a predetermined gauge, the pattern uses a custom fit methodology where you knit a gauge swatch from your chosen yarn, measure the actual gauge produced, and then calculate all measurements based on that result. This approach eliminates sizing guesswork and ensures the finished hat will fit properly regardless of yarn choice.

Construction Techniques

Wild is the Wind employs a distinctive sideways construction method for the brim. The brim is knit horizontally around the bottom of the hat, and as you complete the brim, you simultaneously attach it to the hat body and bind off the body stitches in one integrated step. This efficient technique reduces finishing work and creates a seamless transition between the hat body and brim.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for hat construction, with decreases worked into the design to shape the crown. The specific stitch patterns and decrease sequences are engineered to work across multiple gauges, allowing the design to scale appropriately whether you're working with fingering-weight or bulky yarn.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn: Designed to work with any yarn weight or type, including recycled yarns and fiber blends with variable characteristics. The pattern works equally well with solid or semi-solid yarns, which will showcase the design most clearly. Contrasting colors may be used for the brim if desired for visual interest.
  • Needles: Needle size will vary based on your chosen yarn and desired gauge; select needles appropriate for your yarn weight and the gauge you wish to achieve.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills in basic stitches, decreases, and hat construction techniques.

Collection Context

Wild is the Wind is part of Lee Meredith's Remixed collection, a series of knit accessory designs specifically developed to pair beautifully with recycled and unconventional yarns. The collection emphasizes sustainability and creative yarn use while maintaining excellent finished results.
