Product Description
Our wiggly crochet July 4th hot pad and coaster is a great addition for celebrating any patriotic holiday, including Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day! The hot pad is perfect for the hot dish at your patriotic celebration meal while the coaster keeps surfaces unharmed from water rings. And they make great gifts, too!
The pattern includes 2 wiggly crochet charts: one for the hot pad and one for the coaster, as well as written instructions and a brief tutorial on doing wiggly crochet.
The hot pad measures 6 1/4” wide x 5 3/4” high. The coaster measures 4 1/4” wide x 4 1/4” high. This set is made with size 10 cotton crochet thread in White, Spanish Red and Dark Royal.
These designs are worked in wiggly crochet with a foundation mesh made first, then the design is worked on top of the foundation mesh. Give wiggly crochet a try. You’ll be glad you did!
Wiggly July 4th Flag Hot Pad and Coaster
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern by Susan Lowman creates a festive pair of July 4th-themed table accessories: a hot pad measuring approximately 6 1/4" wide by 5 3/4" high, and a matching coaster measuring approximately 4 1/4" wide by 4 1/4" high. Both pieces feature a patriotic wiggly flag design, making them ideal for holiday table settings and entertaining.
Craft and Techniques
This project is executed entirely in crochet, classified as an intermediate skill level. The pattern employs mesh crochet techniques, which create an open, lacy fabric structure perfect for both functional hot pads and decorative coasters. The wiggly flag design adds visual interest and movement to the traditional geometric mesh foundation.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches including:
- Chain stitches (ch) for foundation and spacing
- Double crochet (dc) as the primary structural stitch
- Slip stitches (sl st) for joining and finishing
The mesh gauge is set at 11 mesh and 12 mesh rows per 3" square, providing a consistent, predictable fabric density suitable for both pieces.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern calls for size 10 cotton crochet thread, a fine-weight material ideal for creating delicate, detailed work. The total yardage requirements are:
- White (A): 170 yards total (105 yards for hot pad, 65 yards for coaster)
- Red (B): 135 yards total (85 yards for hot pad, 50 yards for coaster)
- Blue (C): 65 yards total (40 yards for hot pad, 25 yards for coaster)
The pattern was photographed using J&P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen thread in #1 White, #126 Spanish Red, and #87 Dark Royal, though any brand of size 10 cotton crochet thread in coordinating colors will work effectively.
Tools Required
Two steel crochet hooks are needed: size 7 (1.65mm) and size 10 (1.3mm), or sizes as required to achieve the specified gauge. Steel hooks are recommended for working with fine cotton thread, as they provide durability and precision for this delicate work.
Design and Functionality
The hot pad's larger dimensions make it practical for protecting table surfaces from hot dishes and cookware, while the smaller coaster serves as a companion piece for beverages. Both items showcase the patriotic color palette of red, white, and blue, with the wiggly flag motif creating an eye-catching, festive aesthetic perfect for Independence Day celebrations and summer entertaining.
