Product Description
This is a pattern in collaboration with Holiday Yarns as part of the Heroes and Villains Sock Club 2014.

The Whiplash Sock is worked from the twisted rib cuff down, with zig-zag Energy Whips following the length of the sock and the stolen Arc Reactor technology taking its place front and centre.
“There will be blood in the water, and the sharks will come...”

Whiplash Socks by RedScot
What Is Being Made
The Whiplash Socks are an advanced-level knitted sock design inspired by the Marvel villain Whiplash. These socks feature thematic design elements including an Arc Reactor motif positioned prominently on the front of the sock and zig-zag Energy Whips that run the length of the leg. This pattern was created in collaboration with Holiday Yarns as part of the Heroes and Villains Sock Club 2014 collection, making it a limited-edition collaborative design for knitters seeking character-inspired hosiery.
Construction and Techniques
The Whiplash Socks are worked from the cuff down, beginning with a twisted rib cuff that provides structure and elasticity at the sock opening. The design incorporates yarn overs (yo's) throughout the pattern, which create the distinctive zig-zag Energy Whip motifs that travel down the length of the sock. The yarn over technique is used extensively to achieve the final sock dimensions, allowing the pattern to work across three different needle sizes while maintaining proper fit and drape. This advanced construction method requires careful attention to stitch placement and tension management.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches enhanced with shaping techniques. The twisted rib creates vertical texture at the cuff, while the body of the sock utilizes yarn overs as a primary design element to form the Energy Whip zig-zag patterns and the Arc Reactor design. The combination of these techniques creates both visual interest and structural integrity in the finished sock.
Materials and Tools Required
- Needles: Set of 5 double-pointed needles (dpns) in one of three sizes depending on desired sock size: 2.75mm (US 2) for large, 2.5mm (US 1.5) for medium, or 2.25mm (US 1) for small
- Yarn: Holiday Yarns Flock Sock Sock Yarn in the Whiplash colorway
- Notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
Difficulty Level
This is an advanced knitting pattern best suited for experienced sock knitters. The extensive use of yarn overs combined with the twisted rib cuff and the need to manage pattern repeats across five double-pointed needles requires solid foundational skills, comfort with dpn knitting, and the ability to read and follow complex stitch patterns.
