Product Description

The Wheatsheaf Boot Cuffs or Toppers have been designed to match the Wheatsheaf Cowl, Wheatsheaf Hat and Wheatsheaf mittens. I love cables and wanted something that was both fun and quick to knit. This cable pattern reminded me of a Wheatsheaf at harvest time, though some say it reminds them of warm Winter Kisses?

The edging is ribbed (K2, P2) and has a good stretch to it. It will fit stretch between 12-22 inches for the smaller size and 14-25 inches for the m/l. The sizing is achieved by moving up a needle size and for the M/L size I used a 5.5mm/US9 circular needle for the main part of the boot cuff.

Cable pattern 24sts x 36rows = 4.25 in x 6in/11cm x 15cm with 5.5mm/US9 24sts x 36 rows = 4in x 5.5in/10cm x 14cm with 5mm/US8

Wheatsheaf Boot Cuffs by Loraine Birchall

What is Being Made

The Wheatsheaf Boot Cuffs are knitted leg warmers designed to be worn over boots or shoes. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Loraine Birchall offers a practical and stylish accessory that combines decorative cable work with functional ribbed cuffs. The pattern includes sizing options for both S/M and M/L, allowing crafters to customize the fit to their needs.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate-level knitting project features two primary techniques working together to create visual interest and structure. The boot cuffs begin with ribbed cuff sections that provide elasticity and a snug fit around the leg. The main body showcases cable knitting, a classic technique where stitches are crossed over one another to create raised, twisted patterns that resemble twisted rope or braided designs. The wheatsheaf cable pattern creates an elegant, textured appearance that elevates these practical boot toppers into a fashionable accessory.

Materials and Yarn Weight

The Wheatsheaf Boot Cuffs can be worked in multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different preferences and yarn stash options. The pattern accommodates Aran, DK, and Worsted weight yarns. Specific yarn recommendations include:

  • Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash (200-220 yards)
  • Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted (200-250 yards)
  • Stylecraft Special Aran with Wool (200-250 yards)

The yardage requirements vary slightly between the S/M and M/L sizes, with the larger version requiring additional yarn.

Needles and Gauge

This pattern requires two different needle sizes to accommodate the different stitch patterns. The ribbed cuff sections are worked on 3.5mm or 3.75mm needles (US sizes 4 or 5), which creates the necessary tension for a fitted, elastic edge. The cable pattern body is worked on larger 5mm or 5.5mm needles (US sizes 8 or 9), which allows the cables to expand and display their full textured beauty. The gauge for the cable pattern body is 24 stitches by 36 rows, measuring 4 to 4.25 inches wide by 5.5 to 6 inches tall over 10 centimeters, worked in the unstretched state to ensure accurate measurements.

Pattern Details

Designed by Loraine Birchall and released in October 2015 as Pattern Version 1.0, this project is protected under copyright by Woolly Madly Deeply Ltd. The downloadable PDF format makes it convenient for crafters to access the complete instructions and work at their own pace. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic knitting techniques and have some experience with cable work before beginning this project.
