Product Description

The inspiration behind this blanket was the retro, 90s-inspired geometric designs typical of this decade. The shapes are each worked separately, holding 4 strands together as if they were 1, and applied to the completed blanket as the last step. These shapes provide a really fun, raised, textural element that any bebe would love to touch.

Photos are included within the pattern to assist you in sewing each shape onto the finished blanket.

Whatever Baby Blanket by Janine Myska

Project Overview

The Whatever Baby Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket designed by Janine Myska. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket suitable for babies, combining a primary white body with contrasting colored accents. The project uses straightforward crochet techniques and is accessible to crafters new to the medium.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a baby blanket worked in the round or flat construction. The blanket features a main body in white with a coordinating border and decorative elements in contrasting colors. The finished piece is designed as a practical and visually appealing blanket for infants, combining functionality with decorative appeal through color blocking and stitch variation.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The Whatever Baby Blanket employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The primary stitch used throughout the blanket is the Griddle Stitch, which creates a textured, visually interesting fabric. The pattern is worked flat, allowing for straightforward row-by-row construction. The design incorporates a border worked in a contrasting navy color, with additional decorative elements in pink and pale aqua that are attached to the completed blanket body. Pattern notes indicate that turning chains do not count as stitches, simplifying stitch counting for newer crocheters.

Stitches Used

  • Griddle Stitch – The primary stitch used for the blanket body, creating texture and visual interest
  • Chain stitches (Ch) – Used for foundation and construction
  • Border stitches – Worked in contrasting navy yarn to frame the blanket

Yarn and Materials

The Whatever Baby Blanket is worked using Lion Brand A Star Is Born in Naptime, a category 4 worsted weight yarn made from 100% polyester. Polyester yarn offers practical benefits for baby blankets, including easy care and durability. The yarn requirements include:

  • Main Colour (White): 5 balls, totaling 1530 yards
  • Navy (Border): 1 ball, requiring 180 yards total
  • Pink (Accent): 1 ball, 75 yards
  • Pale Aqua (Accent): 1 ball, 75 yards

Hook and Gauge

The pattern calls for a 4.5 mm crochet hook (US size 7) or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. The target gauge is 15.5 stitches by 14 rows over 4 inches when working the Griddle Stitch pattern. Gauging is performed on a flat swatch by chaining 19 stitches and working rows 1 through 3 as specified in the pattern, then repeating rows 2 and 3 until reaching 18 total rows. Measuring the inner 4 inches of the swatch ensures an accurate gauge reading.

Pattern Features

The Whatever Baby Blanket pattern includes helpful guidance for completing the project. The PDF contains instructional photos on page 4 demonstrating how to attach the contrasting colored shapes to the blanket body, making the finishing process clear for beginners. The straightforward construction and beginner difficulty level make this an ideal first blanket project for crocheters developing their skills.
