Product Description
From the Brassica family of plants, weld has been used throughout history as a natural yellow dye. Inspired by the Brassica colour of a gorgeous skein of The Uncommon Thread Silky Alpaca yarn, Weld is a textured and lace one-skein crescent shaped shawlette knit from the top down.
Gauge is not critical to the success of this project, but yardage requirements and the size of the project may vary with yarn substitutions or gauge changes.
Weld is a customizable shawl. Knit as many or as few repeats of the main body as you like! Size of shawl may also vary with how severely project is blocked. This pattern would look great in fingering or DK weight yarns as well.
The shawl is worked from the top down, forming a shallow crescent with a slightly rounded top edge.
The pattern is fully charted and written, so you can knit from whichever you prefer. It has been testknit and tech-edited.

Weld Shawlette by Meghan Jackson
What Is Being Made
Weld is a single-skein crescent-shaped shawlette designed by Meghan Jackson. This textured and lace knit project is inspired by the natural yellow dye historically derived from plants in the Brassica family. The shawlette is knit from the top down, making it an ideal project for crafters looking to create an elegant, wearable accessory from a modest amount of yarn.
Knitting Techniques
This advanced-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance and structure. The shawlette features a combination of textured and lace elements, creating visual interest throughout the piece. Top-down construction allows knitters to customize the final size and easily adjust the project based on yarn availability. The broken rib pattern forms the foundation of the gauge and contributes to the garment's drape and flexibility.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern used in Weld is broken rib, which creates a textured fabric with excellent elasticity. Lace elements are incorporated throughout the design to add delicate detail and visual dimension to the crescent-shaped shawlette. Stitch markers are recommended between repeats to help track pattern progression, though their use is optional for experienced knitters.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn: The Uncommon Thread Silky Alpaca Sport weight (80% alpaca, 20% silk blend); 286 yards (261 meters) per 100 grams; 1 skein in colour Brassica, with optional additional yardage in colour Plata for bind-off
- Needles: US #5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, 32 inches or longer, and US #6 (4.00 mm) circular needles, 32 inches or longer
- Additional Notions: Stitch markers (optional), yarn needle for finishing
Gauge and Sizing
The project is worked to approximately 17 stitches and 31 rows over a 4-inch (10-centimeter) square in the broken rib pattern, measured after relaxed blocking. The shawlette is customizable in size; as written, one skein of The Uncommon Thread Silky Alpaca Sport creates a finished piece proportional to the yardage available.
