Because my lovely daughter in law (midwife) was telling me that we are experiencing a bit of a baby boom just now and I’m often asked for ideas to knit for a new baby I designed this door/wall wreath for a new baby's bedroom. This would make a lovely welcome gift/keepsake for a brand new baby. I have used double knitting yarn, from my stash, and a 25cm/10 inch polystyrene wreath. All parts are knitted flat and assembled. I have included a very detailed step by step making up guide to help you. As with all my patterns you may sell finished items.
The Welcome New Baby Wreath is an intermediate-level knitting design that creates a decorative wreath suitable for celebrating new arrivals. This project combines a knitted wreath cover with embellished baby and balloon motifs, making it an ideal handmade gift for nurseries or baby shower displays.
This design comprises three main components: a wreath cover that wraps around a polystyrene base form, a small knitted baby figure, and multiple knitted balloon decorations. The finished wreath measures approximately 25cm (10 inches) in diameter, creating a charming decorative piece that celebrates new parenthood.
The wreath cover is the primary structural element, worked in double knitting (DK) weight yarn using 4.5mm knitting needles (size 7 imperial/7 US). The pattern requires 50 grams of yarn for this component. Alternatively, crafters may substitute Aran or Worsted weight yarn with appropriately sized needles as indicated on the yarn ball band, allowing for customization based on available materials.
The baby figure and balloon decorations are worked separately using double knit yarn on 2.5mm straight knitting needles (size 12 imperial/1.5 US). This component requires 25 grams of primary color yarn (yarn A) and 20 grams of skin-tone colored double knit (yarn B), plus small amounts of double knit yarn in various colors for the individual balloons. For crafters preferring heavier yarn, Aran or Worsted weight can be used with 3.5mm needles (size 4 US), though this requires a larger 12-inch (30cm) diameter wreath base.
This intermediate-level project employs fundamental knitting techniques to create both flat and dimensional elements. The wreath cover is worked as a flat knitted piece that is subsequently wrapped around the polystyrene base form. The baby figure and balloons utilize toy stuffing to create soft, padded shapes, with 8mm safety eyes providing facial features appropriate for a decorative item.
The pattern includes detailed making-up instructions that guide crafters through assembly and finishing. The use of different needle sizes for different components allows for varied fabric densities—smaller needles create tighter, more defined stitching for the delicate baby figure, while larger needles produce a more open fabric suitable for the wreath cover.
While the primary pattern calls for double knitting weight yarn, the design accommodates Aran or Worsted weight alternatives. This flexibility allows crafters to work with yarn from their existing stash or to adjust the final wreath size by selecting a larger polystyrene base form when using heavier yarn weights.
This pattern is an original design by Pat Alinejad, offered as a downloadable PDF for independent crafters. The design reflects thoughtful consideration of typical yarn weights and needle sizes available to knitters, with clear guidance for successful project completion at an intermediate skill level.
