What Is Being Made
The Wednesday Adams Mitts are a pair of winter hand coverings designed for warmth and visibility during cold weather activities. These mitts are ideal for bikers, joggers, and anyone needing reliable hand protection during winter months. The design features a simple construction that can be completed in less than a day, making it an excellent project for crafters new to mittens.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This pattern teaches fundamental mittens-making techniques including knitting and seaming. The straightforward design approach makes it accessible for beginners while still producing functional, wearable mitts. The pattern includes tutorials to guide you through each step of the process, and an Abbreviations/Skills section provides reference information for specific knitting techniques used throughout the project.
Yarn and Materials
The Wednesday Adams Mitts are constructed using Wool-Ease Wow yarn in Jumbo weight. The pattern calls for two colors:
- Main Color (MC): Wool-Ease Wow Cream, 7 Jumbo skeins
- Contrasting Color (CC): Wool-Ease Wow Charcoal, 7 Jumbo skeins
The thick Jumbo yarn weight is a key factor in the quick completion time, as heavier yarns work up faster than standard weights. Additional notions include reflective thread and a sewing needle for seaming and adding optional reflective details for nighttime visibility.
Knitting Needles and Gauge
This pattern uses US No. 17 straight knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for working with Jumbo weight yarn. The gauge for this project is 5 stitches by 10 rows over a 4 inch by 4 inch square, which helps ensure your finished mitts will fit properly and have the intended drape and structure.
Optional Reflective Yarn Feature
An optional enhancement to the Wednesday Adams Mitts includes reflective yarn or thread, which adds visibility for nighttime activities. This feature is particularly useful for bikers and joggers who need to remain visible to traffic during early morning or evening workouts, adding both safety and functionality to the finished project.
Skill Level and Project Duration
Rated as a beginner-level project, the Wednesday Adams Mitts are designed to be approachable for knitters new to mittens construction. The combination of simple design, Jumbo yarn weight, and included tutorials makes this an ideal first mittens project that can realistically be completed in a single day of crafting.
