Product Description
Wavelet is a two colour, trapez shaped shawl in fingering weight, which just wraps around your neck one time or covers your shoulders. The shawl is worked from tip to tip with increases and decreases in squishy garter stitch. The stripes and tiny bobbles will keep this section interesting yet relaxing to knit. The middle part of the shawl uses multiple yarn overs to achieve a wavy lace pattern. No need to cut the yarn at the colour changes! The pattern does explain how to manage your yarn so there will be only four ends to weave in at the end.
Suggested yarn: 2 skeins of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (100% Merino Wool) in different colours. The sample is shown in Silver Fox (colourway 1) and London Cosmopolitan (colourway 2). Or other fingering weight in two different colours.
Total yardage: Colourway 1: 400yds (365m). Colourway 2: 185yds (170m).
Wavelet Shawl by Marielle Zatar
What Is Being Made
Wavelet is a two-colour trapezoid-shaped shawl designed by Marielle Zatar. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a versatile accessory that wraps around the neck once or drapes across the shoulders. The finished shawl measures 57 inches (145 cm) in length and 16.5 inches (42 cm) in width after blocking, making it an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions.
Construction and Design Features
The shawl is worked from tip to tip, meaning knitting begins at one point and progresses outward with strategic increases and decreases that shape the trapezoid silhouette. This construction method allows the designer to control the shawl's dimensions and create a balanced, wearable garment. The two-colour design adds visual interest without requiring yarn cutting between colour changes—the pattern provides instructions for managing yarn transitions so that only 4 ends need to be woven in upon completion.
Stitches and Techniques Used
Wavelet incorporates a variety of knitting techniques to create texture and visual appeal:
- Garter stitch forms the foundation of the shawl, described as squishy and relaxing to knit, providing a soft, reversible fabric
- Stripes created through the two-colour work add pattern and depth
- Tiny bobbles scattered throughout the garter stitch sections provide dimensional texture and keep the knitting engaging
- Lace pattern featuring multiple yarn overs creates wavy, openwork sections in the middle portion of the shawl
- Increases and decreases shape the trapezoid form and control shawl dimensions
- Knitting and purling form the basic stitches
- Slipping stitches used for stitch management and shaping
- Yarn overs create the lace openwork sections
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Wavelet is worked in fingering weight yarn, which creates a delicate, refined fabric suitable for a neck wrap or shoulder shawl. The pattern calls for 2 skeins of yarn; Madelinetosh is suggested as the recommended yarn choice. Fingering weight yarn on appropriate needles produces the precise stitch definition needed for both the bobble details and the lace pattern sections. The two-colour construction allows knitters to explore colour combinations while maintaining yarn efficiency through the tip-to-tip working method.
Skill Level
Wavelet is rated as an intermediate knitting project. Knitters should be comfortable with fundamental techniques including increases, decreases, yarn overs, and bobble construction. The combination of garter stitch (beginner-friendly) with lace sections (requiring attention to yarn over placement) and bobble details makes this project suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to expand their technical skills.
