Product Description

This is the seventh in my new washcloth series! These have been designed to help crocheters expand on their skill set by playing with stitches and stitch designs that may be new to them while creating something that is useful. This series we're playing with borders so that you can discover new ways to add an edge to your own projects.

This design uses single crochet and chains to create a border.

The yarn used in this washcloth is KnitPicks Dishie.

As with all my patterns it is written in US and UK terms.

Washcloth 7 Series 2 by Seona Roberts

Project Overview

Washcloth 7 Series 2 is a beginner-friendly crochet dishcloth design created by independent designer Seona Roberts. This project is part of a series focused on exploring different border techniques that can be adapted across multiple crochet projects. The washcloth is worked in 100% cotton yarn at worsted or aran weight, making it an ideal choice for kitchen use, dishcloths, and other practical household items.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a functional washcloth or dishcloth suitable for everyday kitchen and bathroom use. The design emphasizes versatility through its adaptable border technique, allowing crafters to customize the finished piece based on their preferences and stitch counts.

Crochet Techniques and Approach

The Washcloth 7 Series 2 focuses on border construction as its primary technique. Seona Roberts has deliberately selected borders that are forgiving and flexible, requiring no overly specific stitch counts. This approach makes the pattern accessible to beginners while remaining practical for experienced crocheters looking to expand their border repertoire.

Flexibility and Customization: The border pattern is designed to be adaptable to various projects. If your stitch count doesn't align perfectly with the pattern requirements, the instructions provide simple adjustments. Rather than ripping back, you can skip an extra stitch when working chain 3 stitches, substituting a skip of 2 stitches instead of 1. Additionally, you can add extra stitches before and after corner stitches if you prefer a larger or differently proportioned border.

Repeatable Rows: The border rows can be repeated multiple times if you desire a larger border for your specific project, allowing you to scale the design to your preferences.

Stitches Used

  • Slip Stitch (ss): Used for joining rounds and securing stitches
  • Chain (ch): Foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Single Crochet (sc): Basic stitch providing structure and texture
  • Double Crochet (dc): Taller stitch used for creating height and drape in the border

The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout, with UK term equivalents provided for international crocheters.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for any 100% cotton yarn in 10ply, worsted, or aran weight. Seona Roberts uses 1 x 100g ball of Knit Picks Dishie for this project. Cotton yarn is ideal for washcloths and dishcloths because it is absorbent, durable, and machine washable, making it perfect for frequent use in kitchen and bathroom settings.

Hook: A 5mm crochet hook is required for working with the specified yarn weight.

Additional Tools: A needle for weaving in ends is necessary to finish the project neatly.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or those looking to build confidence with basic stitches. The straightforward stitch combinations and forgiving border design eliminate frustration while teaching fundamental crochet techniques.

Pattern Structure

The border pattern begins with a base round (round 1) that requires a multiple of 4 stitches plus additional stitches for the corners. This mathematical foundation ensures even distribution around the washcloth perimeter. The modular approach means you can work the border on any appropriately sized base, making this pattern highly transferable to other crochet projects beyond dishcloths.
