Materials For this crochet raccoon you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/ 3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need three colours of yarn, grey (1/3 of a 100 yard skein), light beige (1/5), and (brown)black (1/5). The quantities are estimates. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal safety eyes and as nose a safety nose. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). A pipe cleaner in the tail is optional if you want it to be bendable. Lopi colour numbers: 0057, 0086 and 0052.

Wasby the Raccoon Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Wasby is a crocheted amigurumi-style raccoon toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk under the brand Son's Popkes. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished raccoon doll measuring approximately 5.1 inches (13 centimeters) in sitting height when made with the recommended yarn. The design is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters looking to create a charming stuffed animal toy.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental amigurumi construction techniques to bring Wasby to life. The raccoon is worked in the round using spiral construction, a common method for creating seamless, three-dimensional crocheted toys. The designer recommends using a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round, moving it up as new rounds progress to maintain clear row tracking. Color changes are incorporated throughout the pattern to create the raccoon's distinctive markings, with more complex color transitions highlighted in color-coded instructions within the PDF for ease of following. The pattern uses standard American crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with this convention.

Stitches and Construction Details

While the PDF excerpt does not specify every individual stitch used, the pattern employs standard crochet stitches typical of amigurumi construction. Color changes are executed by changing color in the last loop of a stitch, ensuring the loop remaining on the hook matches the new color for seamless transitions between sections. The pattern includes both complex color changes (written in color-coded format for clarity) and simpler color transitions (noted after round descriptions), requiring crocheters to read complete instructions before beginning each round.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn, which provides the ideal texture for this project. The designer strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn to achieve the best appearance and tactile quality for the finished raccoon toy. The finished size is dependent on both the yarn weight selected and individual crochet tension, so experimentation with eye sizing and other details may be necessary despite the pattern's recommendations.
