Product Description
This warm shawl, knit with worsted weight yarn, will not only cheer you up on drab days, but will also keep you warm. The shawl features 2 distinct cables. The focal cable is an unusual one, fairly delicate and yet ornate. Both of these cables come to us from Japan.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a good working knowledge of cabling).
All the stitches are charted and written out line by line.
The finished shawl measures 22 inches x 74 - 78 inches.
The yarn used in the sample is Shepherd Worsted by Lorna’s Laces, undyed.
Any worsted weight yarn will work for this pattern. No crochet hooks needed if you don't want to crochet the edging.
Warm Kando Japanese Shawl by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
The Warm Kando Japanese Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted wrap designed by Linda Lehman. This is a substantial, wearable garment that combines traditional Japanese cable motifs with Western pattern symbols to create an ornate and functional shawl suitable for warmth and style.
Primary Craft and Techniques
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft. The shawl incorporates two separate cable stitches throughout the design, both inspired by Japanese knitting traditions. Cable knitting is the featured technique, requiring knitters to have a solid working knowledge of cable stitches to successfully complete this project. The pattern also includes an optional crochet edging as a finishing method, which uses basic crochet techniques to add a polished border to the completed knit wrap.
Stitches Used
The Warm Kando Japanese Shawl features:
- Cable stitches — Two distinct cable patterns derived from Japanese knitting traditions serve as the primary stitch elements
- Ornate cabled focal stitch — A decorative cable pattern that forms the visual centerpiece of the shawl
- Crochet stitches — Used for the optional edging finish (Method #1), applied with crochet hooks rather than knitting needles
The combination of these stitches creates both visual interest and structural warmth, making the shawl engaging to knit while remaining practical for everyday wear.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Requirements: This project requires 1650 to 1900 yards of worsted weight yarn (also known as aran weight yarn). The substantial yardage allows for a generous, wrap-style shawl with excellent drape and coverage.
Needles and Tools:
- Size US #8 (5.00mm) knitting needles — primary needles for the main knit fabric
- Size US #5 (3.75mm) knitting needles — likely used for ribbing or other stitch sections requiring a tighter gauge
- One cable needle — essential for executing the cable stitches throughout the pattern
- Row counter (optional but recommended) — helpful for tracking progress through pattern repeats
- Stitch markers (optional but recommended) — useful for marking pattern sections and preventing dropped stitches
Optional Crochet Edging Materials: Approximately 100 yards of matching or coordinating yarn paired with Size H and I crochet hooks completes the edging (Method #1). Crocheters with particularly tight or loose tension may need to adjust hook sizes accordingly for optimal results.
Difficulty Level
This shawl is rated as intermediate difficulty, assuming the knitter has a good working knowledge of cable knitting techniques. Knitters should be comfortable reading cable charts, managing multiple stitches on a cable needle, and maintaining consistent tension across cable crossings before beginning this project.
