Product Description

Featured on Crystal Palace's web site!

A great unisex sock pattern that looks terrific in a solid as well as a varigated yarn.

Ribbing in the design makes for a well fitting sock that doesn't creep down your leg or bag at the ankle. Fit is important in a sock, after all we spend a good amount of time knitting them not to mention the cost of the yarn!

This design is very elastic which is why I have combined the sizes into S/M and M/L. The leg circumference can accomodate up to 25cm (10") for the S/M and up to 30cm (12") for the M/L.

The pattern has written and charted instructions which is easy to remember and is worked on 2.75mm (US#2) DPN's making it a fast project! You will need 334m (364 yds) of fingering weight yarn for the S/M size and 366m (408 yds) for M/L size.

Walk this Way Unisex Socks by Char Kohl

Project Overview

Walk this Way is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for comfortable unisex socks designed by Char Kohl. This downloadable PDF provides instructions for creating a pair of socks in two adult sizes with options for mirror-image or identical sock construction. The pattern combines practical sock construction techniques with a decorative cuff pattern, making it suitable for knitters with some experience.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a complete pair of adult socks featuring a ribbed cuff, patterned leg section, and foot. The design accommodates two size options: Adult Small/Medium (fitting foot lengths of 9 to 10 inches with up to 10 inches leg circumference) and Adult Medium/Large (fitting foot lengths of 10 to 11 inches with up to 12 inches leg circumference). The socks are unisex in design and intended for everyday comfort wear.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The socks are worked in the round using the traditional double-pointed needle method, which allows for seamless construction. The pattern includes options for creating mirror-image socks (one sock using left-twist cuff and leg patterns paired with a right-twist version) or identical socks (both worked with matching cuff and leg patterns). This flexibility allows knitters to choose between symmetrical or asymmetrical sock pairs based on personal preference.

Stitches Used

The cuff pattern is based on a multiple of 8 stitches and incorporates fundamental knitting stitches:

  • Knit stitch (K) - the primary stitch for creating the fabric structure
  • Purl stitch (P) - used in alternation with knit stitches to create textured ribbing
  • Left-twist (LT) and right-twist (RT) variations - these directional pattern options create mirror-image or matching sock designs

The pattern includes stitch guides and charts on page 5 of the PDF to clarify stitch placement and pattern repeats. Knitters work the cuff pattern for 9 rounds (Small/Medium) or 10 rounds (Medium/Large) before continuing to the leg and foot sections.

Materials and Tools

The pattern specifies yarn and needle requirements based on sock size:

  • Yarn for S/M: 2 balls Crystal Palace Panda Cotton Solid (364 yards total)
  • Yarn for M/L: 2 balls Crystal Palace Maizy (408 yards total)
  • Needles: Set of 4 double-pointed needles (dpns) in US size 2
  • Additional tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

The specified yarns are 4-ply weight, which produces a gauge of 8 stitches per inch. This gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished sock dimensions. The cast-on requires 56 stitches for Small/Medium or 64 stitches for Medium/Large, divided evenly across three double-pointed needles before joining in the round.

Pattern Features

The downloadable PDF format provides complete instructions with size variations indicated parenthetically throughout. The pattern emphasizes careful construction details, including a specific note to avoid twisting stitches when joining the cast-on edge in the round—a critical step for seamless sock knitting. The inclusion of both stitch guides and charts accommodates different learning styles and provides visual references for pattern repeats.
