Product Description
Wakame is a Japanese seaweed, that grows abundantly throughout the coastal regions of Japan, and has been appreciated for hundreds of years both as an ingredient of traditional cuisine and for its beneficial properties on the body. It grows in turbulent waters and has a beautiful and elegant appearence when it fluctuates in the sea, with its long, broad leaves. This design, inspired by the Japanes alga has a lot of movement and textural interest in the fabric. Wakame is a skinny scarf formed by oblonged modules attached one to another while you knit. Each module is started from the center using the lighter color with a magic cast on, then worked in the round using increases to obtain a leaf shape. Then a ruffle is worked using the contrasting color to add movement and fun. Finally, a second ruffle is worked picking up stitches from the middle garter ridge of the module.

Design Inspiration and Construction
Wakame is a knitted scarf design inspired by the Japanese seaweed of the same name, which grows abundantly in coastal regions of Japan and has been valued for centuries in traditional cuisine and for its beneficial properties. The design captures the elegant movement and appearance of wakame as it fluctuates in turbulent ocean waters, featuring elongated leaves that gently float around the body. The finished scarf measures approximately 4 inches (10 centimeters) in width and 80 inches (200 centimeters) in length, creating a garment with significant textural interest and fluid movement in the fabric.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its organic, flowing aesthetic. The primary stitch used throughout the scarf is garter stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges that contribute to the dimensional quality of the design. The scarf incorporates central increases as a structural technique, which are strategically placed to create the elongated leaf-like shapes characteristic of wakame seaweed.
The pattern utilizes both a main color (MC) and a contrasting color (CC), allowing for visual depth and design complexity. Stitch markers play an important role in tracking progress throughout the project: two markers designate the beginning and center of each round, while four additional markers track the central increases, and six removable markers provide flexibility for pattern adjustments.
Materials and Gauge
Wakame is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a balanced thickness suitable for creating defined stitch definition while maintaining the fluid drape necessary for the floating leaf effect. The recommended gauge is 26 stitches and 52 rows over 4 inches by 4 inches (10 centimeters by 10 centimeters) in garter stitch, ensuring proper fabric density and finished dimensions.
Essential notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends upon completion. The length of the finished scarf is easily adjustable by working additional or fewer modules, allowing knitters to customize the final dimensions according to personal preference.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
This design is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with increases, color changes, and marker management. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, offering convenient access to detailed instructions and any accompanying charts or schematics designed by Paola Albergamo.
