VooDoo Doll Amigurumi Pattern by Rachel Baumann
What is Being Made
This is a VooDoo Pin Cushion Amigurumi pattern created by Rachel Baumann of ChiChi's Whimsical Crochet. The finished project is a decorative pin cushion designed in the amigurumi style—a Japanese technique for creating small, stuffed crocheted toys and accessories. The completed VooDoo doll measures approximately 4½ inches tall and functions as both a whimsical decorative piece and a practical pin holder for sewing supplies.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Amigurumi is a specialized crochet technique that involves creating three-dimensional, densely-stuffed fabric pieces by crocheting in continuous rounds. The pattern is written using US crochet terminology and is classified as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for crafters with some crochet experience beyond basic chain and single crochet stitches.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern employs several key crochet techniques essential to amigurumi construction:
- Chain (Ch) stitches form the foundation and connecting elements
- Invisible decreases are used throughout the pattern to create seamless shaping and maintain the aesthetic quality of the finished piece. These decreases allow the doll to be shaped and sized without visible seams or bumps disrupting the surface
- Increases (INC) are incorporated to expand sections of the fabric as needed for the doll's form
- Continuous round construction typical of amigurumi, which creates a seamless tubular or spherical structure
The pattern instructions emphasize using tight stitches throughout the project and generous stuffing to maintain the doll's shape and structural integrity during use as a pin cushion.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The VooDoo Pin Cushion Amigurumi is constructed using worsted weight yarn (classified as Medium 4 ply), which is a standard medium-weight yarn suitable for creating amigurumi with good stitch definition and durability. The pattern calls for yarn in three colors:
- Beige (primary color for the doll body)
- Black (for details and features)
- Red (for accent details)
A 3.5 mm crochet hook is used with the worsted weight yarn to create the tight, dense fabric required for amigurumi construction. The pattern notes that crafters can create a smaller version of the VooDoo doll by reducing both the yarn ply weight and corresponding hook size.
Additional Supplies and Finishing Details
Beyond yarn and hook, the project requires several finishing materials and notions:
- 10 mm black plastic safety eyes for the doll's facial features
- A 16 mm button for decoration (with options to substitute a smaller button or create a sewn X design)
- Fiber fill for stuffing the amigurumi to maintain its three-dimensional shape
- Pins for decoration, which serve the dual purpose of adding visual interest and demonstrating the pin cushion functionality
- A hot glue gun (or sewing needle and thread) for attaching the button and other embellishments
- Sewing needle and thread for hand-stitching details and securing safety eyes
- Optional stitch markers, pins, and stitch counter to assist with tracking stitches and rounds during construction
Pattern Notes and Customization
The pattern provides helpful guidance for crafters working through the project. It emphasizes that crochet tension should remain tight and consistent, and that the amigurumi should be stuffed generously to prevent the doll from losing its shape when pins are inserted and removed during use. The pattern creator references instructional video resources for learning invisible decrease techniques, recognizing that this intermediate stitch may be new to some crafters. The scalability of the design—achieved by adjusting yarn weight and hook size—allows crafters to create VooDoo pin cushions in various sizes to suit their preferences.
