Product Description

This is a challenging pattern for knitters looking for some adventurous, Battlestar-Galactica-inspired sock-knitting action!

Knitted from the cuff down, these socks feature an intricate twisted cable pattern knitted with viper pilots Starbuck and Apollo in mind. The central arrow cable bears more than a passing resemblance to the speedy viper ships flown by Galactica’s death-defying pilots, flanked by maelstrom-like swirls that recall the violent but beautiful complexities of space.

On these socks, the same combination of swirled rib cables and arrow cable is featured on the front and back of the leg, and continues down the instep of the foot. Additionally, this pattern features a heel flap, with twisted stitches and cables continuing elements of the leg pattern; a similar pattern appears on the toe.

Viper Pilots Sock Pattern by GlennaC

What Is Being Made

Viper Pilots is a downloadable knitted sock pattern designed by independent designer GlennaC. This pattern creates a pair of fitted socks available in two sizes: Medium and Large. The socks are constructed to comfortably fit leg and foot circumferences of 8–8.75 inches (Medium) or 9–10.5 inches (Large), with the sample sock knitted to fit a woman's size 11 foot and measuring 9 inches around the ankle.

Craft and Techniques

Viper Pilots is a knitting pattern of intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch work. The socks are knitted in the round using traditional sock construction methods, allowing crafters to choose between two needle techniques based on personal preference and equipment availability.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern features stockinette stitch as the primary construction stitch. The sample sock demonstrates a gauge of 32 stitches and 40 rounds over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on 2.5mm needles. The cuff or leg portion measures 1.5 inches in width, providing a comfortable and secure fit at the ankle.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Viper Pilots requires 375 yards of fingering weight yarn for the Medium size or 400 yards for the Large size. The pattern is specifically designed for fingering weight or "sock" yarn, which is the traditional choice for sock knitting due to its durability and appropriate thickness.

The sample sock shown in the pattern was knitted using Dream in Color Starry in the colorway 'cocoa kiss.' This yarn is composed of 98% superwash merino wool and 2% lurex, with 450 yards per 4-ounce skein. Additional yarn recommendations include:

  • Dream in Color Smooshy
  • Tanis Fiber Arts Blue Label sock yarn
  • Cosmic Blue Label sock yarn

Needles and Equipment

Viper Pilots is knitted on 2.5mm (US #1.5) needles. Knitters may choose between two methods for working in the round: a set of 4 double-pointed needles (DPNs) or a 32-inch (or longer) circular needle using the Magic Loop technique. Both methods are equally valid for this pattern.

Sizing and Gauge Adjustments

The pattern provides guidance for customizing fit. To achieve a smaller sock size, knitters should reduce needle size and/or adjust yarn selection accordingly. Further needle size reduction can create even smaller sizes if needed. Achieving the correct gauge of 32 stitches and 40 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch is essential for proper fit, and knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to match the specified gauge.
