Product Description

Knitted gloves in vintage style

I’ve a faible for vintage style and especially designing knitted gloves in vintage style. The pattern shown has a lace pattern that also includes cables, it's pretty flexible so it fits almost everyone.

The pattern itselfI’ve worked a lot with the fit of the glove, and it’s especially, after my opinion at least, the way the thumb is made that has a lot to say about how nice the gloves are to wear. It fits like hand in glove so to speak. The pattern is very detailed described and there are added photos as well.

On a knitting scale from one to three, where one is easy and three is difficult, I will rate it around two.

Yarn and needlesI use needles 2.5 mm- US 1.5 and I tried the pattern with Drops Alpaca. Gauge is 33 sts and 44 rows = 10 cm

And in sock yarn from arwetta, Filcolana, 80% wool and 20 % nylon. Gauge is 35 sts and 47 rows = 10 cm

What is Being Made

The Vintage Gloves: Margrethe is a knitted glove pattern designed by Birgitte Petersen. These are classic-style knitted gloves created in a vintage aesthetic, suitable for everyday wear. The pattern accommodates customization for cuff length and finger length to ensure a personalized fit.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project uses fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for hand-knitted gloves. The primary construction method involves stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for fitted garments like gloves. The pattern includes ribbed cuffs, a traditional finishing technique that provides elasticity and helps the gloves stay securely on the wrist.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch – The main stitch used throughout the glove body, creating the characteristic smooth knit fabric
  • Ribbing – Used for the cuff to provide stretch and secure fit at the wrist

Materials and Specifications

The Vintage Gloves: Margrethe are knitted using 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a refined, fitted garment suitable for vintage-style gloves.

Recommended Yarns:

  • Drops Alpaca
  • Filcolana arwetta (80% superwash merino wool, 20% nylon)

The nylon content in recommended yarns increases durability, making these gloves more resistant to wear despite the time investment required for hand-knitting.

Yarn Quantity: One to two skeins are required, depending on cuff length and individual finger length. A single 50-gram skein of arwetta is sufficient for a pair of fingerless gloves with a 6 cm cuff, with yarn remaining.

Needles: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) knitting needles are used for the main fabric.

Gauge

Achieving proper gauge is essential for correct fit. The pattern provides two gauge options depending on yarn choice:

  • Drops Alpaca: 33 stitches and 44 rows = 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using 2.5 mm needles
  • Filcolana arwetta: 35 stitches and 47 rows = 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using 2.5 mm needles

If gauge does not match, adjusting needle size up or down will help achieve the correct tension and finished measurements.
