Product Description

As of December 2014, this pattern is available for free. Enjoy!

Vinkel for adults is available here.

Curious about something else than traditional bottom up or top down knitting? Want to play around a bit with the garment construction? Vinkel is an easy and fun garment that will keep your interest – diagonal garter stitch and basic shaping takes you from the front edge, across the shoulders and down again, finished off with some easy seaming along the back and sides.

It’s highly recommended by the ones who tested this pattern to knit both sides of the garment at once, to make sure you work the same number of rows on each side. If you haven’t tried this technique before – what are you waiting for?

Note: Because the garment is so stretchy, there was an issue during the testing that the garment slipped down the shoulders. To fix this I’ve made changes in the sizing, and added the double breasted front buttoning. If you still end up with this problem though, a good way to solve it is to crochet a series of stitches along the back “v”, to make it tighter and keep it from separating.

Vinkel Cardigan: Diagonal Garter Stitch Knit Pattern

What Is Being Made

Vinkel, which means "Angle" in its language of origin, is a beginner-friendly cardigan designed with an unconventional construction method. This garment features a unique diagonal garter stitch construction that begins at the front edge and travels across the shoulders, descending down the opposite side. The cardigan is finished with double-breasted front buttoning and is completed through straightforward seaming along the back and sides.

Construction Technique

The Vinkel cardigan employs a distinctive diagonal knitting approach that departs from traditional bottom-up or top-down garment construction methods. Rather than building the garment in conventional rows, this pattern guides knitters through a diagonal path that creates the entire front and shoulder shaping in one continuous piece. This innovative technique offers knitters an engaging alternative to standard cardigan construction while maintaining beginner-level accessibility.

Key construction recommendation: The pattern strongly advises knitting both sides of the garment simultaneously to ensure consistent row counts on each side, promoting balanced shaping and symmetrical fit. This technique prevents discrepancies between the left and right sides of the cardigan.

The garment's inherent stretchiness required design modifications during testing. To address shoulder slippage issues, the sizing was adjusted and double-breasted front buttoning was incorporated into the final design. Should shoulder slippage occur despite these modifications, crochet reinforcement along the back "V" neckline can tighten the fit and prevent separation.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch: The primary stitch throughout the cardigan, creating the diagonal texture and providing structure with its characteristic ridged appearance
  • Basic shaping stitches: Simple increases and decreases integrated into the garter stitch foundation to create garment shaping
  • Seaming stitches: Used to join the back and side seams after the main diagonal sections are completed
  • Crochet stitches (optional): Available as a reinforcement technique along the back neckline for improved fit

Materials and Specifications

The Vinkel cardigan is designed to work with aran or worsted weight yarn, providing excellent stitch definition for the garter stitch texture. These yarn weights offer the structure necessary to support the diagonal construction while remaining accessible for beginner knitters. Knitters will require appropriate needles sized to the chosen yarn weight, following standard knitting needle sizing guidelines for aran and worsted yarns.

Difficulty Level

Classified as a beginner pattern, Vinkel introduces knitters to advanced construction concepts while remaining achievable for those new to garment knitting. The diagonal garter stitch technique and basic shaping make this an excellent project for developing construction skills and exploring alternative garment architecture without requiring advanced technical knowledge.
