Viktor Blazer Knitting Pattern for Boys – MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino

The Viktor Blazer is a sophisticated, tailored knitting pattern for boys designed by MillaMia. This experienced-level pattern produces a classic blazer with a refined, structured silhouette that is equally at home at a family celebration or a smart casual occasion. The design is available in three sizes to fit ages 2–3, 3–4, and 4–5 years, with actual chest measurements of 68 cm, 73 cm, and 78 cm respectively, and shoulder lengths ranging from 36 cm to 44 cm.

Design Highlights and Construction

One of the most distinctive features of the Viktor Blazer is how it cleverly exploits the reversible nature of moss stitch (known as seed stitch in US terminology). This property allows the collar to be knitted directly as part of the main body rather than being constructed and sewn on as a separate piece, resulting in a cleaner, more professional finish. The collar can be pressed into shape with an iron to help it hold its form. For an especially neat appearance, the pattern suggests using the Swiss darning technique with the main colour to tidy up any colour changes visible on the front of the collar once the garment is complete.

The blazer is worked flat in separate pieces and then seamed together, following a classic bottom-up construction method. This approach gives knitters full control over shaping and finishing, and is well suited to an experienced knitter who is comfortable working flat and assembling a structured garment. The pattern includes buttonholes worked into the front band, finishing the blazer with four smart white buttons approximately 15 mm in diameter.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Moss stitch (seed stitch): The primary stitch pattern used throughout the blazer, creating a dense, reversible fabric with a subtle textured surface. Moss stitch is formed by alternating knit and purl stitches across every row, offsetting them on subsequent rows so that knit stitches sit above purl stitches and vice versa. This gives the fabric a firm, non-curling quality ideal for a structured blazer.
  • Garter stitch: Referenced within the pattern for specific sections, adding further textural variety.
  • Buttonhole construction: Worked into the front band to accommodate the four buttons, requiring careful placement and neat execution.
  • Increases and decreases: Including k2tog (knit two stitches together) for right-leaning decreases, and m1 and m1p make-one increases for shaping the body and sleeves.
  • Seaming: The finished pieces are joined together, requiring neat seaming skills to achieve the structured blazer shape.
  • Swiss darning: An optional embroidery technique used on the finished garment to refine colour transitions on the collar.

Materials

The Viktor Blazer is knitted in MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino, a sport weight yarn sold in 50g / 1¾ oz balls. The main colour (M) requires 8, 9, or 10 balls depending on size, shown here in Midnight (101). A single ball of contrast colour (C) in Snow (124) is also required for the collar detailing. The pattern achieves a tension of 26 stitches and 44 rows to a 10 cm square over moss stitch using 3.25 mm (US 3) needles. A pair of 3 mm (US 2) needles is also required for the ribbed or finer-gauge sections.

Suggested Alternative Colourways

MillaMia offers several suggested alternative colour combinations for the Viktor Blazer, giving knitters the freedom to personalise the design. These include:

  • Claret (104) with Storm (102)
  • Fawn (160) as a pairing option
  • Scarlet (140) with Seaside (161) and Fawn (160)
