Product Description

Décolletage is the neck and chest area of a lady, revealed by the low neckline of her dress (her cleavage if you will). In early Victorian times, it was proper to keep this covered up and wear dresses with high, floofy necklines. This cowl will help bring those days back, but only to fight off the cold of course. Knit top down, the back half of the stitches will be cast off while continually decreasing on the front half to create the triangle shape that will fit perfectly into your coat. An applied i-cord is knit around the bottom edging to give it a clean finish, as us ladies must be of the highest presentation at all times. It will be the perfect cowl to keep your dearest décolletage warm.

Sample 1: Knit with 2 strands of lace weight yarn and 1 strand of sport weight yarn: 240 yds/220 m of total lace weight yarn (split up into 2 balls) and 95 yd/87 m of sport weight yarn

Sample 2: Knit with 1 strand of worsted weight yarn: 110 yds/100 m of worsted weight yarn

Victorian Décolletage Cowl by Attic 166

Project Overview

Victorian Décolletage is a thoughtfully designed cowl that combines historical inspiration with practical warmth. Created by Amanda of Attic 166, this knitting pattern draws its name from the décolletage—the neck and chest area traditionally revealed by low necklines in Victorian fashion. Rather than exposing this delicate area, this cowl provides elegant coverage and insulation for cold weather, making it an ideal accessory for layering under coats or wearing as a standalone neck warmer.

Design and Construction Method

The cowl is worked from the top down, employing a clever construction technique that creates its signature triangular silhouette. The pattern features a split decreasing strategy: while the back half of stitches are progressively cast off, the front half continues with decreasing shaping to form a dramatic triangle. This asymmetrical design allows the cowl to fit perfectly into coat necklines and provides tailored coverage specifically where needed. The finished piece measures approximately 10 inches (25 cm) wide by 13 inches (33 cm) long from top to tip when laid flat and blocked, with a circumference of about 20 inches (51 cm).

Finishing Details

To achieve a polished, professional appearance befitting its Victorian-inspired aesthetic, an applied i-cord is knit around the bottom edging. This technique adds a clean, refined border that frames the triangular shape and prevents edge curling while enhancing the overall presentation of the finished cowl.

Yarn and Materials

Victorian Décolletage is designed to work with multiple yarn weights combined for optimal drape and warmth. The sample shown was knit using 2 strands of lace weight yarn paired with 1 strand of sport weight yarn, creating a balanced blend that offers both delicate texture and substantial coverage. This multi-strand approach allows knitters flexibility in yarn selection while achieving the intended finished dimensions and fabric characteristics.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern incorporates several key knitting techniques:

  • Top-down construction: Working from the neck opening downward provides built-in fitting adjustments and allows for try-on during the knitting process
  • Asymmetrical decreasing: Strategic decreases on the front half create the triangular shape while the back half is cast off, requiring attention to shaping instructions
  • Applied i-cord edging: A separate i-cord is knit and applied to the bottom edge, adding a refined finish and structural stability

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, Victorian Décolletage requires solid foundational knitting skills including proficiency with decreases, shaping techniques, and the ability to work with multiple yarn strands simultaneously. The top-down method and asymmetrical construction add complexity beyond basic cowl patterns, making this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their shaping and finishing skills.
