Product Description

This is a bias-knit garter shawl with an openwork lace edging. Gauge is not a particular requirement for this pattern, and it can be knit equally well in worsted or DK weight yarns.

This is an excellent pattern choice for beginning knitters who want to expand their skills. The increases are basic and repetetive, the basic pattern is garter stitch, and the lace is a fairly simplistic, repeating pattern.

This shawl can be worn as both a traditional shawl or as a cowl/scarf.

Verge Shawl by Keya Kuhn

Project Overview

Verge is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design created by independent designer Keya Kuhn. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a generous triangular or crescent-shaped shawl with finished dimensions of 58 inches (147 cm) x 44 inches (112 cm) x 37 inches (94 cm), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap.

Yarn and Materials

The Verge pattern is designed with flexibility in yarn weight, accommodating both DK weight and worsted weight yarns. The original pattern calls for approximately 620 yards of yarn in DK weight, or a comparable yardage in worsted weight. The recommended yarn for this project is Miss Bab's Yowza Light Worsted, which is composed of 100% superwash merino wool and provides 560 yards per 226-gram skein. This fiber content ensures a soft, durable, and easy-care finished garment.

Needles required depend on yarn weight selection: US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles measuring 24 to 32 inches are used for worsted weight yarn, while US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles of the same length are appropriate for DK weight yarn. A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends upon completion.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a blocked gauge of 16 stitches by 19 rows over 4 inches. The pattern notes that exact gauge matching is not required; however, variations in gauge will affect the total yardage needed to complete the shawl. Knitters using DK weight yarn will work to a larger stitch count than those using worsted weight, with specific stitch counts provided in the pattern instructions for each yarn weight option.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

As an intermediate-level knitting project, Verge employs circular needle knitting techniques, which allow for seamless construction and the ability to work flat or in the round depending on the shawl's architectural design. The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches and shaping methods appropriate for creating a shawl with defined dimensions and structure. Knitters should be comfortable with reading pattern instructions, managing stitches on circular needles, and executing blocking techniques to achieve the finished dimensions specified in the pattern.
