What you'll need

Product Description

In Esperanto, the word "varmo" means "warmth". Developed in 1887, Esperanto is a universal language created to bridge the communication gap between all peoples and cultures on our planet.

Warmth is also a universal ideal, whether interpreted as physical comfort, emotional connection, or spiritual love. With this pattern, I wish you “varmo” in every sense of the word.

Finished Measurements Circumference: 26" Height: 15"

If you'd prefer an infinity cowl, just chain more to start. Add a multiple of 4 chains to ensure that the pattern stitch works out. (A minor detail, I know.)

Varmo Cowl by Melissa Leapman

What Is Being Made

Varmo is a crocheted cowl designed by Melissa Leapman. The finished cowl measures 26 inches in circumference and 15 inches in height, making it a substantial neck accessory suitable for layering and warmth. The name "Varmo" comes from Esperanto, meaning "warmth," reflecting the designer's intention to create a piece that provides physical comfort and connection.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs several fundamental techniques to construct the cowl. The pattern begins with a foundation chain and uses the following stitches and techniques:

  • Double crochet (dc) stitches form the primary fabric structure
  • 4-dc decrease technique, which combines four double crochet stitches into a single stitch to create shaping and texture variation
  • Chain spaces (ch) used strategically throughout the pattern to create openwork sections and stitch definition
  • Slip stitch (slip st) used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Foundation rounds that establish the base circumference of the cowl

The pattern construction uses a circular, round-by-round approach, allowing the crocheter to build the cowl from the foundation upward to the finished height of 15 inches.

Materials Required

Approximately 400 yards (366 meters) of DK weight yarn is needed to complete this project. The photographed sample was made using King Cole's Curiosity yarn in color #2898 Camouflage. A size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook is required for working with DK weight yarn at the appropriate gauge.

Difficulty Level

Varmo is rated as an intermediate crochet project, suitable for crafters with foundational knowledge of basic crochet stitches and techniques who are ready to work with stitch decreases and circular construction methods.
