Product Description
The Vancouver Harbour Shawl features a lace pattern, reminiscent of little bridges. The triangular shawl is worked from one vertex, increasing along one edge with jagged decreases along the other edge.
A small amount of yarn goes a long way with this pattern, so it is great for that special skein you’ve been saving. The construction means the size is completely adjustable and the pattern works with many yarn weights. Instructions are included to make an increase only shawl.
Level: Easy The pattern uses basic stitches and features an easy repeat. The increase edge differs with each row and does require some attention. There is a detailed picture tutorial.
Size: Adjustable. The pictured shawl is 59" wide and 11" deep and used 58g of sport weight yarn.
The PDF download includes:
- The complete pattern for the shawl

Vancouver Harbour Shawl by Rachel Beth
What is Being Made
The Vancouver Harbour Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl designed as an adjustable-size accessory. The pictured finished shawl measures approximately 59 inches wide and 11 inches deep after blocking, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is designed for crochet, making it an accessible project for beginner-level crocheters. The shawl is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques that build upon basic stitch foundations, allowing newer crafters to develop their skills while creating a wearable finished object.
Stitches Used
The Vancouver Harbour Shawl incorporates several essential crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to begin the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – a basic short stitch for structure and shaping
- Double crochet (dc) – a medium-height stitch that forms the primary fabric
- Treble crochet (tr) – a taller stitch that adds openness and drape
- V-stitch (v-st) – a special stitch combining multiple stitches to create decorative texture and lace effects
The pattern also uses standard crochet abbreviations including skip (sk), space(s) (sp), and stitch(es) (st) to structure the instructions across seven foundation rows and subsequent pattern rows.
Materials and Yarn
The Vancouver Harbour Shawl is designed with flexibility in yarn weight selection. The pattern accommodates sport weight, DK weight, 3-ply, 4-ply, 6-ply, lace weight, and worsted weight yarns, allowing crocheters to customize their project based on available materials and desired final dimensions.
The pictured sample was created using Bergamo Light yarn in the Sunshine on Water colorway (#37), a sport weight option composed of 100% Merino Wool. The sample required approximately one hank of yarn, totaling 360 yards (329 meters) per 100 grams, though only 58 grams or 210 yards of the sport weight yarn was used for the finished shawl shown.
To complete this project, crocheters will need a Size E (3.50 mm) crochet hook or an appropriately sized hook matched to their chosen yarn weight, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and optional stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and increases.
Sizing and Adjustability
The Vancouver Harbour Shawl features an adjustable size structure. Before blocking, the pictured shawl measured approximately 49 inches wide and 9.5 inches deep. After blocking and wet finishing, dimensions increased to 59 inches wide and 11 inches deep, demonstrating the significant impact of blocking on the final garment shape and drape. The increase edge measures approximately 4 inches before blocking and 4.75 inches after blocking, following the completion of rows 1 through 7 of the pattern.
Gauge Considerations
Notably, gauge is not critical for this shawl pattern. This beginner-friendly approach means crocheters do not need to work a gauge swatch before beginning, making the pattern more accessible to newer crafters. However, variations in individual tension and yarn weight selection will affect the final size and yardage requirements of the completed shawl.
