Product Description
Last month the Getty Museum challenged people to recreate famous works of art. The results were sometimes amazing, sometimes hysterical.
I decided to try my own recreation using crochet. Turns out, one of the biggest challenges was finding a famous painting that looked easy enough to duplicate in yarn but still appealed to me visually. I wanted something colorful to cheer me up on these dreary days. Settling on one of Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings, I rummaged through my yarn stash to find the appropriate colors.
Van Gogh Sunflowers Crochet Cushion Panel by Lisa Ferrel
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level crochet project designed to create decorative cushion panels inspired by Van Gogh's iconic sunflower paintings. The finished panel measures approximately 21 inches tall by 15 inches wide, making it suitable for pillow covers or wall art applications. The design combines traditional crochet techniques with color work to recreate the vibrant, expressive nature of the original artwork.
What Is Being Made
The project produces a crochet panel featuring sunflower motifs rendered in multiple colors. The design includes individual sunflower elements constructed separately and then incorporated into a larger composition. The panel can be used as a cushion cover, pillow front, or framed textile art piece. The finished dimensions allow for versatile home décor applications.
Crochet Techniques Used
- Magic circle method: Used to start the sunflower centers with a closed ring construction
- Tapestry crochet and color changes: Multiple yarn colors are worked into rows to create the pictorial design, with strategic color transitions between stitches
- Circular construction: Sunflower centers are worked in the round using joined rounds
- Flat panel construction: The main canvas is worked in rows to build the rectangular composition
- Stitch increases and shaping: Increases are used to expand the circular flower centers and create dimensional effects
Stitches Used
- Single crochet (sc): Primary stitch for the circular sunflower centers, worked in multiple rounds with increases
- Half double crochet (hdc): Used extensively in the main panel rows to create a stable, dense fabric suitable for color work
- Chain stitch (ch): Used for foundation chains and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between circular sections
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project uses worsted weight yarn in a carefully selected palette of colors totaling approximately 18.5 ounces. The yarn quantities are precisely allocated by color to match the Van Gogh composition:
- 4 oz. blue (primary background color)
- 2 oz. gold (sunflower petals)
- 2 oz. yellow (sunflower highlights)
- 2 oz. green (foliage)
- 1.5 oz. lavender (secondary background)
- 1 oz. dark green (leaf details)
- ½ oz. brown (flower centers and details)
- ½ oz. saffron (accent color)
- ¼ oz. light green (leaf accents)
A size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook is used throughout the project to work the worsted weight yarn to the appropriate gauge. The pattern also incorporates 5 yards each of blue denim and pumpkin-colored materials, likely for backing, edging, or finishing details on the completed cushion panel.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle color work and multi-part construction. The combination of circular and flat construction methods, along with the precision required for color changes to create the pictorial design, requires experience beyond basic single and double crochet projects.
