Product Description

We all have those unique skeins of beautiful yarns, some hand spun, always with gorgeous colours.

What to knit with them is a difficult choice, we need a project that allows us to use every inch of it.

Vagas was designed with that thought in mind, if you can’t complete a motif it doesn’t change the beauty of the cowl.

I used Mosa Mjúkull, a blend of alpaca and Icelandic wool and it turned out so soft and cosy!

With this pattern you’ll have some relaxing knitting hours and, once the project is finished, a wonderful gift for the knit worthy people in your life.

Vagas Cowl by Clarice Gomes

What is Being Made

Vagas is a knitted cowl design created by independent designer Clarice Gomes. This project is specifically engineered for knitters who have unique, precious yarn skeins—including hand-spun varieties—and want to use every inch without worrying about completing a complex motif. The cowl's flexible design means that if you run out of yarn mid-pattern repeat, the beauty of the finished piece remains intact. The sample shown measures 86 cm (33.9 inches) in circumference and stands 35 cm (13.8 inches) high, making it a substantial neck piece suitable as a gift or personal accessory.

Knitting Techniques

The Vagas cowl employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The garment is worked from the bottom up in the round, which means you'll be knitting continuously in circular rows rather than flat pieces that require seaming. This method creates a seamless, tubular construction ideal for cowls. The pattern features repeating motifs that form the visual interest of the piece. A key design feature is the adjustable sizing—you control the final dimensions by changing the number of motif repeats, allowing you to customize the cowl to your specific yarn quantity or preferred fit.

Stitches Used

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names, the pattern utilizes a motif-based structure that repeats throughout the cowl. The repeating pattern elements create visual texture and interest while remaining accessible to beginner knitters. The flexibility of the design means partial motifs at the end do not detract from the finished appearance.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Vagas cowl is designed to work with aran weight yarn, though the sample was created using Mosa Mjúkull, a DK weight blend of Icelandic wool and alpaca. The sample required approximately 100 grams (about 170 meters or 185 yards) of yarn. This fiber blend produces a notably soft and cosy fabric, combining the warmth of Icelandic wool with the luxurious drape of alpaca. The pattern is intentionally flexible with yardage requirements, making it suitable for various yarn quantities and weights, which is central to its appeal for using up special or limited-quantity skeins.

Specific needle size recommendations are not detailed in the provided content, though needle selection would typically be determined by the yarn weight and desired fabric density, following standard knitting conventions for aran and DK weight yarns.
