Product Description

An easy but effective pattern. The design gives a lot of interest which still stands out when worn. The length of this cowl means that it looks great wrapped double and then gives a really chunky and urban look.

I used a soft and cosy chunky yarn from Katia. This colour is a pale grey which means it should mix with nearly all other colours you're wearing. You can use any chunky / bulky yarn you like though.

It is knitted flat on two needles and joined together at the rear.

Written in full, easy to follow instructions in English, with both British and American terms throughout.

What is Being Made

The Urban Double Cowl, also known as an Eternity Scarf, is a versatile neck accessory designed by anrol (Lorna Robson). This cowl is specifically engineered to be wrapped double around the neck, creating a chunky, urban aesthetic. With a diameter of 152cm (60 inches) and a length of 23cm (9 inches), this piece offers substantial coverage and visual impact. The design is suitable for adult and large adult sizes, making it an accessible project for various body types.

Techniques Used

The Urban Double Cowl employs straightforward knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern is knitted flat on two needles, meaning you work back and forth in rows rather than in the round. Once the flat piece reaches the desired dimensions, it is joined together at the rear to create the continuous loop characteristic of a cowl or infinity scarf. This construction method keeps the pattern simple while still producing a polished, finished garment.

Stitches and Stitch Details

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch abbreviations, the pattern is described as easy but effective, indicating it likely uses basic knit stitches that create visual interest without requiring advanced techniques. The design achieves its distinctive look through strategic stitch selection and construction rather than complex stitch patterns, making it ideal for knitters new to cowl construction.

Materials and Yarn

The Urban Double Cowl is designed to work with chunky or bulky weight yarn. The pattern calls for 3 balls of 100g (3oz) yarn. The original design was created using Katia Alaska chunky yarn in colorway 9 Tintada (pale grey), which was selected for its soft quality and neutral color that coordinates easily with most wardrobes. However, the pattern is flexible—any chunky or bulky yarn may be substituted, allowing knitters to choose colors and fiber content that suit their preferences and needs. The pattern includes a tension/gauge section to help knitters verify their yarn choice will produce the correct finished dimensions.

Needles and Tools

This pattern requires 8mm straight needles (size 11 US / 0 UK). Straight needles are the traditional two-needle option used for flat knitting, and their size is matched to the chunky yarn weight to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.

Pattern Format and Instructions

The Urban Double Cowl is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern with full, easy-to-follow written instructions in English. The pattern accommodates both British and American knitting terminology throughout, ensuring clarity for knitters regardless of their regional background. This inclusive approach makes the pattern accessible to a wide international audience of knitters.

Design and Finished Look

The Urban Double Cowl is engineered to deliver maximum visual impact with minimal complexity. When wrapped double as intended, the substantial length creates a chunky, urban aesthetic that makes a bold fashion statement. The design achieves significant visual interest through its construction and proportions, ensuring the finished piece stands out when worn despite using straightforward knitting techniques.
