Product Description

In Minnesota, it is not uncommon to hear the term Up North, which generally means anything north of the Twin cities metropolitan area. Minnesotans go “up north” in the summer as well as winter.

The Land of 10,000 lakes is obviously known for spending time on, in or near the water. Boot socks are necessary in many seasons as they are ideal for hiking as well as snow skiing.

These cabin socks can be worn inside a hearty winter skiers’ boots for Nordic or downhill skiing as well as in summer while hiking on the Gunflint Trail. I highly recommend them for any woodsy time at the cabin you have planned.

Up North Cabin Socks by Cori Eichelberger

Project Overview

Up North Cabin Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Cori Eichelberger of Irocknits Designs. These are versatile boot socks crafted for both winter and summer outdoor activities, inspired by the Minnesota tradition of spending time "up north." The pattern was created as part of the "Lots of Socks" February 2020 Knit-Along event, which raised money and awareness for Down Syndrome International. These socks are ideal for wearing inside winter ski boots for Nordic or downhill skiing, as well as for summer hiking adventures on trails like the Gunflint Trail.

What You'll Make

This pattern produces a pair of boot socks designed to be worn inside hearty winter skiers' boots or hiking boots. The socks feature a cabin-inspired aesthetic suitable for woodsy outdoor activities and mountain retreats. The finished socks are constructed to provide warmth and durability for serious outdoor enthusiasts.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

  • Available in three sizes: Adult Small, Medium, and Large
  • Foot circumference: 8 (9, 10) inches / 20.5 (22) centimeters

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs the Andalusian stitch, a textured stitch pattern that adds visual interest and dimension to the finished socks. The socks are worked in the round, which is the standard construction method for seamless sock knitting. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, comfortable fit inside boots.

Gauge and Yarn Weight

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rounds equal 4 inches in Andalusian stitch. This pattern accommodates both aran and worsted weight yarns, providing flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining proper fit and drape. These yarn weights are substantial enough to create durable, warm socks suitable for boot wear in cold weather conditions.

Notions and Materials Required

  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and size increases
  • Scrap yarn or stitch holders for holding stitches during construction
  • Appropriate needles for your chosen yarn weight (typically US 6-8 for worsted and aran weights)

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to sock construction. Despite the beginner-friendly rating, the finished socks are fully functional and suitable for serious outdoor use.

Special Features

A distinctive feature of this pattern is the inclusion of 9 different toe options, allowing knitters to customize the appearance and construction method of the sock toe. This variety adds creative flexibility to the project and enables makers to choose the toe technique that best suits their skill level and preferences.
