Umka Baby and Children's Mittens by Olga Beckmann
What is Being Made
Umka is a set of seamless baby, toddler, and children's mittens designed by Olga Beckmann. The pattern includes four size options to accommodate different ages: Birth to 9 months (without thumb), 12 to 18 months, 2 to 3 years, and 4 to 5 years. Each size produces finished mittens with specific widths ranging from 5 cm to 8 cm after wet blocking, ensuring a proper fit for growing hands.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
These mittens are constructed using seamless, in-the-round knitting, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric. The mittens are worked from the cuff upward in a single piece, which streamlines the construction process and is ideal for beginners learning foundational knitting methods. The pattern uses the Kitchener stitch for grafting the final stitches at the top of the mittens, creating an invisible, professional finish at the crown.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the Umka mittens is Stockinette stitch, worked in the round. Stockinette stitch in circular knitting creates a smooth, classic fabric with a neat V-pattern appearance on the right side. This fundamental stitch is beginner-friendly and allows the yarn's texture and color to shine through without complex stitch manipulation.
Yarn and Materials
The Umka pattern calls for Aran weight yarn, with yardage requirements of just one skein for all sizes. The designer recommends two specific yarn options:
- Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino: A luxury blend containing 55% wool, 33% acrylic, and 12% cashmere in 50-gram (1.8 oz) skeins, offering softness and durability suitable for delicate baby skin
- Garnstudio Drops Lima: A natural fiber blend of 65% wool and 35% alpaca with 109 yards per 50-gram skein, providing warmth and a gentle hand feel
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires five double-pointed needles (DPNs) in US size 4 (3.5 mm) for working in the round. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch.
Additional notions needed include a row counter for tracking progress, stitch markers for marking the beginning of rounds and pattern sections, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and executing the Kitchener stitch, and a safety pin for securing stitches if needed during construction.
Difficulty Level
Umka is rated as a beginner-level pattern, making it an excellent project for knitters new to circular knitting and in-the-round construction. The straightforward Stockinette stitch, simple shaping, and minimal stitch techniques required make this an accessible introduction to seamless mitten knitting.
