Product Description
A free version of this pattern is available on Knitting with Chopsticks.
Intended to show off the gorgeous changes of an ombre or gradually variegated yarn, the Umbral Shawl features a stockinette background punctuated by garter ridges that drift farther apart as you work the pattern.
This pattern is very forgiving for gauge and yardage. You can bind off on any row, altering the thickness of the final garter edge as necessary. It is simple to extrapolate the pattern to add more rows (though I am always available by email if you need help with that!).
Level: beginner. Knit, purl, yarn over.
Due to the nature of PDF patterns, I cannot offer any refunds on them. If you have any issues with this pattern, please email me at clairdelunefiberart[at]gmail[dot]com and I’ll do whatever I can to help!
Umbral Shawl by Allison Bostrom
What is Being Made
The Umbral Shawl is a knitted triangular shawl designed by Allison Bostrom of Clair de Lune Fiber Art. This beginner-friendly shawl features a curved top edge and is sized at 18 inches deep with a 56-inch wingspan along the curved top edge, making it an elegant accessory suitable for various occasions and styling preferences.
Yarn and Materials
The Umbral Shawl is designed to be worked in worsted or aran weight yarn (weight category 4). The sample featured in the pattern was created using Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in True Blue. The pattern requires 260 to 280 grams of yarn, or approximately 450 to 480 yards. Knitters will need 5.5 mm needles (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge), along with standard notions including a tape measure, scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Techniques and Stitches
This knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The primary stitches and techniques used include:
- Stockinette stitch as the main fabric structure
- Yarn overs (yo) for creating decorative shaping and lace elements
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches for basic stitch work
- Cast on (CO) to begin the shawl
- Bind off (BO) to finish the edges
Gauge and Pattern Flexibility
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14.5 stitches by 21 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. The pattern notes that it is fairly flexible regarding gauge, allowing knitters to adjust their tension slightly based on their personal preferences and yarn characteristics. Crafters can modify the number of rows worked to achieve their desired finished shawl size, making this pattern adaptable to individual needs and yarn variations.
